Windows Snap offers ready-made arrangements, but the layouts it shows depend on display size and may not match how you want to work across an ultrawide screen. I prefer a broad center area for my main window with narrower spaces at the sides, so I use PowerToys FancyZones to define custom zones for that monitor. That is a workflow preference, not proof that Snap is unusable on ultrawide displays.
Why I wanted more than the built-in Snap layouts
Snap is a good starting point when one of its offered arrangements suits the windows you need open. You can open its layout flyout from a window’s maximize button or press Windows+Z; you can also drag a window to the top of the screen to use the Snap bar. The available built-in layouts vary by display size. Microsoft’s Snap documentation describes the built-in options and related features.
My preferred ultrawide arrangement is different from a set of equal-sized columns: I want a roomy central zone for the main task and slimmer side zones for supporting windows. Snap’s presets may be enough for you, but FancyZones lets you position and size zones to suit a chosen monitor.
What Snap already does well
- Snap Assist: After you snap a window, Snap Assist can help fill the remaining spaces with other open windows.
- Resize together: Drag the divider between adjacent snapped windows to resize them.
- Return to a group: Snap groups can be restored from the taskbar, Task View, or Alt+Tab contexts.
These integrated features make Snap convenient if its arrangements work for you. FancyZones is an additional PowerToys utility with a separate layout editor and configuration.

- DO MORE ON ONE SCREEN: See every detail on the wider display featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio; Ultra WQHD provides the simplest way to maximize screen real estate and experience truly seamless multitasking on just one screen.Brightness (Typical) : 300 cd/㎡. Static Contrast Ratio 3000:1.
- ENJOY A BILLION COLORS W/ INCREDIBLE DEPTH: With HDR10 that displays over 1 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for typical SDR technology, dark colors are darker and the brightest are even brighter; Content is experienced as the creator intended
- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
How to create a custom ultrawide layout with FancyZones
- Open the editor. In PowerToys Settings, go to FancyZones and open the layout editor. The documented default shortcut is Win+Shift+backtick; you can change it in FancyZones settings. Microsoft Learn’s FancyZones documentation covers the editor and its options.
- Choose the target display. In the editor, select the monitor that should use the layout. This matters if your PC has more than one screen.
- Pick or make a layout. Select a suitable predefined layout, or create one with Grid or Canvas. Grid uses relative divisions that you can split or merge. Canvas lets you place and size zones individually.
- Arrange zones for your work. For a broad center with narrow side areas, create a large middle zone and smaller zones on either side. Adjust the proportions to the windows you actually use; there is no single best arrangement for every ultrawide display.
- Place windows into zones. By default, hold Shift while dragging a window to show the zones. Move the window over the desired zone until it highlights, then release. FancyZones settings can change how zone activation works.
Check display settings if a window does not land where expected
Windows Display settings let you select a display, adjust scale and resolution, and arrange monitors. If zone placement seems off, check those settings for the monitor you selected. Microsoft notes that using a resolution below the display’s native resolution can reduce text sharpness or cause other display effects. See Microsoft’s guide to changing screen resolution and layout.
FancyZones also documents a multi-monitor edge case: when displays use different DPI scale factors, a window snapped into a zone at a screen edge may sit a few pixels away from that edge. The result can depend on your configuration, so check the placement on your own setup.
