Snap confirmed on March 30, 2026, that it acquired selected assets from Rec Room Inc. and that some Rec Room employees would join Specs Inc., Snap’s hardware subsidiary, to support its eyewear and augmented-reality initiatives. The announcement does not establish that Snap bought Rec Room as a company or plans to bring its social game back.

What Snap acquired from Rec Room

Snap confirmed the selected-asset acquisition to GeekWire, but the public reporting does not identify which assets changed hands or disclose the transaction’s price. That means it is not possible to say whether the deal included particular software, intellectual property, user data, or other property. GeekWire’s March 30, 2026 report also said some Rec Room employees would join Specs Inc.

Snap’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q reported $88.1 million in aggregate purchase consideration for business acquisitions during the six months ended June 30, 2026. It does not name Rec Room or attribute that figure to this transaction, so it should not be treated as the Rec Room deal price. Snap’s filing gives no Rec Room-specific valuation.

Why the acquisition points to Snap’s AR effort

The employee move places some Rec Room experience within Specs Inc., which Snap announced as a distinct subsidiary focused on its hardware work. Snap described smartglasses with see-through lenses that place digital objects in the world in three dimensions, with hand and voice controls. The employee transfer is consistent with Snap building its eyewear and AR capabilities; it does not establish a plan to continue Rec Room as a game. Snap’s announcement of Specs Inc.

Snap’s 2025 annual filing describes Spectacles as wearable AR glasses that extend the AR Lenses experience beyond Snapchat. That description provides context for Snap’s broader AR work, but “Spectacles” and the smartglasses described in the Specs Inc. announcement should not be assumed to be interchangeable product names. Rec Room attributed the closure to its inability to build a sustainably profitable business, alongside changes in the VR market and broader gaming headwinds. In its March 30, 2026 post, the company said: “Despite this popularity, we never quite figured out how to make Rec Room a sustainably profitable business. Our costs always ended up overwhelming the revenue we brought in.” Rec Room also said it had reached over 150 million players and creators over its lifetime; that is a cumulative company figure, not a count of current users. Is Rec Room coming back?

There is no public evidence in the cited reporting that Snap intends to relaunch Rec Room. The established facts are a selected-asset acquisition, a move by some Rec Room employees to Specs Inc., and the closure of Rec Room’s services. The acquired assets have not been itemized, so claims about a revival, continued game access, or transfer of the whole company go beyond what is known. Rec Room’s March 30 shutdown update provides service-closure context.
