Singapore was preparing for a week of finance-focused conferences ahead of its Formula One Grand Prix as smoke haze from Indonesian fires shrouded the city-state, Reuters reported on October 5, 2026. The gathering put business, cryptocurrency and sports leaders in town at a moment when air quality, expensive race-week stays and economic uncertainty were all part of the backdrop.

Why finance leaders were gathering during Grand Prix week

Singapore’s Grand Prix and its surrounding events serve as a global showcase for the city-state. Reuters reported that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., investor Ray Dalio and Eric Trump were among the expected participants in the week’s gatherings. Eric Trump, a co-founder of World Liberty Financial, was due to speak at TOKEN2049.

Organizers expected about 25,000 people at TOKEN2049, matching the prior year’s expected attendance figure, Reuters reported. Separately, The Straits Times, cited by Reuters, reported that about 90,000 senior executives were expected in town. Both are expectations, not confirmed attendance counts.

The Singapore Tourism Board described the race and surrounding events as having “strong momentum,” reflecting confidence despite economic and geopolitical uncertainty, according to Reuters.

Haze was a live concern, but Sunday’s air quality was unknown

On Monday, air quality was forecast to range from high moderate to low unhealthy, Reuters reported. That was a short-range outlook: the report provided no longer-range forecast for Sunday’s race. It therefore does not establish what conditions would be on race day.

Race-week hotel pricing was unusually high in one reported example

Reuters reported that the Fullerton Bay Hotel, beside the circuit, was charging S$5,030 (US$3,933) per night for a room that typically cost US$1,460. This is one hotel’s quoted race-week rate, not a citywide average or a measure of typical Singapore accommodation prices.

Tourism figures mix an annual estimate and a 2026 expectation

Reuters attributed an estimate of about S$145 million in incremental tourism receipts each year to official estimates. It also reported that Maybank economist Chua Hak Bin expected S$160 million in tourism receipts for 2026. The latter is a forecast, not a realized total; the two figures have different time frames and sources, so they should not be read as competing measurements of the same outcome.

Crypto markets and policy were part of the conference conversation

Reuters reported that the cryptocurrency market’s value was about US$3 trillion, down roughly one-quarter year over year, citing CoinGecko. That is a date-specific market measure rather than a lasting benchmark.

The report also described bond-price declines and more cautious sentiment about artificial intelligence as issues for conference attendees. It noted that a hoped-for U.S. regulatory framework had failed to clear the Senate “last month,” and connected the debate in part to Donald Trump’s personal crypto dealings becoming a flashpoint for Democrats. The report does not provide detailed legal or congressional documentation for that account.
