Choose SmartThings if you need a compatible hub for Zigbee or Z-Wave devices; choose Google Home if your home is centered on Google or Nest products and Works with Google Home devices. Both platforms support Matter, and they can coexist in some setups. The deciding factors are your exact devices, hub hardware, and the controls or automations you need—not a headline compatibility count.

SmartThings vs Google Home: the practical differences

Decision area SmartThings Google Home What to check
Device compatibility Samsung describes compatibility with hundreds of devices and brands. Check its supported-device guidance or search for the exact model in the app. Google says its ecosystem supports more than 80,000 Works with Google Home devices, plus Matter devices. This is Google’s figure, not an independently audited comparison with Samsung’s description. See Google’s compatible-device overview. Confirm the exact model and which controls it exposes in the app; a platform-wide count does not establish support for a particular product or feature.
Matter Supported, subject to controller, app, hub-model, and firmware requirements. Supported; hub requirements depend on whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Thread and whether remote control is needed. Check device type, network transport, compatible hub, and away-from-home needs.
Zigbee and Z-Wave Samsung says compatible SmartThings hubs support both protocols. The cited Google Matter guidance covers Wi-Fi and Thread; it does not establish direct Zigbee or Z-Wave hub support. If you already own Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, verify the SmartThings hub model and device compatibility before changing platforms.
Automations Routines combine conditions and actions, but features vary by device and manufacturer policy. Google supports automations, including automations involving Matter devices; device types and feature availability can change. Match the specific trigger and action you want to use to the device’s supported features.
Using both platforms Can link selected devices, scenes, and routines to Google Assistant. Matter multi-admin can support some shared-device setups. Can control compatible Matter devices and linked SmartThings devices through the Google Assistant integration. Coexistence is possible, but setup and available controls depend on device and platform support.

The device counts above describe each company’s own ecosystem and use different terms; they are not a like-for-like measure of independently verified compatibility.

Check your devices before choosing

Make an inventory of the devices you already own and want to add. Record the brand, exact model number, and the functions you rely on—for example, changing a thermostat’s set point, dimming a bulb, or using a sensor as an automation trigger.

  1. For SmartThings: search for the device in the SmartThings app or consult Samsung’s compatibility guidance. Samsung notes that support can vary by product and manufacturer.
  2. For Google Home: check whether the product is marked Works with Google Home or Matter, and verify the exact model in Google’s compatibility overview.
  3. Verify the controls you need: compatibility may allow basic control without exposing every device setting, status, or automation feature in the app.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

Google Home: Wi-Fi, Thread, and remote control

Matter devices communicate over a home Wi-Fi or Thread network. Google’s Matter setup guidance says a supported Google hub is needed to set up and remotely control Wi-Fi Matter devices. Thread devices require a Thread border router. Google lists models including Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) among devices with Matter and Thread support; capabilities differ across models, so check the current device list rather than assuming every speaker or display supports Thread.

SmartThings: confirm the hub model and firmware

SmartThings’ Matter guidance describes controller hubs and app and firmware requirements. Some earlier SmartThings and Aeotec hubs can receive firmware updates for Matter support, even if their packaging predates Matter. Check the exact hub model and firmware, and determine whether your device needs Thread; do not assume that every SmartThings hub has the same capabilities.

Matter does not guarantee identical app features

Matter helps compatible devices work across smart-home platforms, but it does not make every control or automation available in every app. Google notes that platform support for Matter device types can arrive at different times. Verify that both platforms support the particular device type and feature you intend to use.

Which app fits your automations and voice controls?

Automations depend on the device

SmartThings routines use conditions and actions—for example, a time or motion event can trigger an action. Samsung cautions that device features vary by manufacturer policy and that devices without support for an automation feature may not appear in its controlled-device list. Its automation guidance is a reason to verify each intended trigger-and-action pair, not to assume every compatible device supports every routine.

Google Home also supports automations, including those involving Matter devices. Because supported device types and exposed features can change, compare the actual automation you want to build in the relevant app rather than treating either platform as a universal winner.

Google Assistant can work with SmartThings

You do not have to use Google Home as the sole place to manage every device in order to keep using Google speakers or displays. Samsung documents linking Google Assistant to SmartThings: you select a SmartThings location and control whether Google can access its devices, scenes, and routines. The integration does not mean every device or routine transfers automatically. See Samsung’s Google Assistant setup guidance for the current linking options.

Can you use SmartThings and Google Home together?

Yes, in compatible setups. One route is to link SmartThings with Google Assistant, allowing selected SmartThings devices and other supported items to be controlled through Google. Another is Matter multi-admin, which can let a compatible Matter device be shared with more than one platform. Samsung describes multi-admin in its Matter announcement; Google’s Matter guidance covers its own setup requirements.

Choose based on your home

  • Lean toward SmartThings if you have compatible Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, or already own a supported SmartThings hub that can serve your devices.
  • Lean toward Google Home if Google or Nest products and Works with Google Home integrations are central to your setup, and your required devices and controls are supported.
  • Keep both in the picture if you want Google Assistant voice control alongside SmartThings management, or have Matter devices that support multi-admin. Confirm the specific setup rather than assuming full feature parity.
  • Do not choose by ecosystem size alone. Samsung’s broad description and Google’s stated device count are not directly comparable measures; model-level support matters more to your home.
