A smartphone payment system is the combination of phone software, payment credentials, a communication method, and the payment infrastructure behind them, which together let a person use a phone to pay or let a business use a phone to accept payment. Tapping a phone on a payment terminal is one form of it. Scanning a QR code, approving a payment in an app, or paying through a mobile browser can also count.
What the term covers
The phrase is broader than the everyday shorthand “tap to pay.” A smartphone payment system includes every route by which a phone carries out a payment transaction, so it is best understood as a set of parts rather than a single technology.
Four parts are always present in some form:
- Phone software: a payment app or digital wallet that stores or manages the payment method on the device.
- Payment credentials: the card or account details, or a substitute for them, that the transaction uses.
- A communication method: the way the phone exchanges data with the other side, such as NFC, a QR code, Bluetooth, or an app or browser flow.
- Payment infrastructure: the acceptance equipment or online service, the card network, and the card issuer that approve and settle the payment.
Before reading further, decide which role your question is about. A person paying with a phone and a business accepting card payments on a phone are two different roles, and the second is often misread as the first. Both are covered below.

The U.S. Payments Forum’s Mobile and Contactless Payments Glossary, dated September 2017, lists several interaction methods, including QR codes, NFC, Bluetooth, and in-app and mobile-browser payments. Its scope is point-of-sale (POS) interactions only, so it does not define payments made entirely online. The table below compares the methods on the axes that matter most when choosing or explaining one.

The table lists what the 2017 glossary and the EMVCo materials establish. Specific wallets, banks, and merchants may support only some of these methods, and the glossary does not say which ones any particular provider offers.
Consumer payment and merchant acceptance
The same underlying technology can serve two different roles, and the difference matters when you read a product page or a support article.

Consumer: paying with a phone
In the consumer case, the phone is the payment instrument. The person adds a card or account to a wallet or app, then uses the phone at a terminal or in an app to pay. Here the phone is the thing being used to pay, and the store’s terminal is an ordinary payment device on the other side.
Merchant: accepting payment on a phone
In the merchant case, the phone or tablet is the acceptance device. EMVCo describes acceptance directly on NFC-enabled phones and tablets without an attached card reader, which is the model behind TapToMobile. PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) describes a related approach, Contactless Payments on COTS (CPoC), in which a commercial off-the-shelf phone or tablet accepts a contactless payment. A business using this model still depends on its acceptance provider, its payment processor, and the security requirements that apply to its device.

How card data is protected in a phone payment
EMVCo, which maintains the EMV chip specifications, states that each EMV contactless transaction uses a one-time-use security code. Its explanation of mobile wallets, dated 19 October 2022 on its “What is EMV Chip?” page, also says that tokenization replaces valuable card data in mobile wallet transactions with a payment token. In practice, the merchant or terminal sees a token rather than the underlying card number, which reduces the value of the data if it is intercepted.
This security flow belongs to contactless EMV transactions. A QR or in-app payment may use different data handling, so do not assume that the one-time code and token model applies to every smartphone payment method.

What you need for a phone payment to work
Owning a phone with NFC does not by itself guarantee that it can pay. A payment works only when every dependency lines up:
- The phone has NFC hardware, and NFC is turned on in the device settings.
- A supported payment app or wallet is installed and set up on that phone.
- A card or account is enrolled in that app, and the issuer supports mobile wallet use for that card.
- The merchant’s terminal or app accepts the method, and the transaction is in a country and market where the wallet and issuer operate.
Because these dependencies vary by wallet, issuer, merchant, and country, no single phone model or wallet can be assumed to work everywhere. When a payment fails, check each item in this list in order: hardware and settings first, then the wallet, then the card enrollment, then the terminal.

Standards status: CPoC and its successor
The merchant side of this area is changing. PCI SSC’s CPoC page states a formal sunset period of 1 May to 31 October 2026 and directs interested entities toward the newer Mobile Payments on COTS (MPoC) standard. Any business evaluating phone-based acceptance should confirm the current status of the standard it is using with the PCI SSC directly, because the sunset window closes at the end of October 2026.
