Smartmontools is a software package for querying and monitoring storage devices that report SMART data. Its two main utilities have different jobs: use smartctl to inspect or control a device, and smartd for ongoing monitoring. Whether either can read a drive depends not only on the drive but also on your operating system, controller, and any USB bridge between the computer and the device.
What is smartmontools?
Smartmontools is a package for working with Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART), which is built into many modern storage devices. The project documents support for ATA/ATAPI/SATA, SCSI, and NVMe devices. Its documentation describes the project’s scope, not a guarantee that every device and operating-system combination will work. See the official smartmontools documentation and the manual for the version installed on your system.
The package has two principal utilities: smartctl and smartd. They serve different purposes, so choosing between them is mainly a question of whether you want to inspect a device now or monitor it over time.

| Utility | Purpose | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
smartctl |
Queries devices and performs supported operations. | Check a device’s reported health or request more detail. |
smartd |
Monitors storage devices. | Set up ongoing monitoring rather than a one-time inspection. |
Exact commands and setup depend on the operating system, device interface, and installed version. Use that version’s manual rather than assuming a command or configuration applies unchanged across platforms.

Which devices and operating systems does it document?
The project documentation generated on 2025-05-31 lists ATA/ATAPI/SATA-3 to -8 disks, SCSI disks and tape devices, and NVMe devices. It also lists Darwin (Mac OS X), Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, OS/2, Cygwin, QNX, eComStation, and Windows. These are documented project targets, not a promise of support for every current release, hardware model, or connection path.
Access can involve several layers: smartmontools has separate interfaces for ATA, SCSI, and NVMe, and the documentation also describes ATA tunneled through SCSI. A drive may therefore be supported in principle yet inaccessible through a particular OS interface or controller configuration.

How do you check a drive’s reported health?
Use smartctl for a one-time inspection. The precise command depends on your device and platform, so consult the installed manual for the appropriate device path, options, and any required privileges. If the health result is reported as failing, the manual recommends examining further with smartctl -x and copying data to a safe location as soon as possible. Avoid starting with repair operations that could put the only copy of important data at risk.

SMART reporting is not a guarantee of future reliability, whether the result appears healthy or failing.

Why might smartctl show no SMART health result?
An unknown or unavailable result does not establish that the drive is healthy, nor does it by itself prove the drive is faulty. The path between the operating system and disk can limit or disrupt reporting. The smartctl manual specifically notes limitations or bugs in layers such as RAID controllers and USB bridges.
- Check the connection path: determine whether the drive is connected directly or through a RAID controller, USB enclosure, or other bridge.
- Check the software path: verify that the operating system and device interface support access to this drive and that permissions and controller configuration allow it.
- Check device-specific support: use the manual for your installed version to find the right device type or interface option, if one is documented.
- Do not treat missing data as a clean bill of health: investigate compatibility or try a supported direct connection when practical.
For ATA devices, the manual explains that SMART attribute thresholds may be checked when the direct health-status command returns an unknown result. SCSI and NVMe use different reporting mechanisms: the manual describes the Informal Exceptions log page when supported and/or SCSI sense data for SCSI, and the Critical Warning byte for NVMe. Their fields and status signals are not interchangeable.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Bridge support is specific, not universal. For example, the smartmontools 7.5 release notes add -d sntasmedia support for NVMe drives behind ASMedia ASM2362 USB-to-NVMe bridges. That example does not mean other USB enclosures expose SMART data; check the official release notes and the manual for the installed version.
When should you use smartd?
Use smartd when you want monitoring rather than a single manual check with smartctl. Its practical usefulness still depends on whether the operating system and connection path expose the drive’s reporting data. Consult the installed version’s manual for platform-specific setup and monitoring options; the project’s documentation does not make every combination of drive, controller, and OS interchangeable.
