Reliable outdoor power starts with your devices, not a particular power station. Add up how much energy they use over the trip, check that the station can deliver enough power through the ports you need, and treat solar as a variable recharge option rather than a guarantee.

How to choose a portable power station for camping?

Choose a station by matching your equipment list to two separate specifications: stored energy, measured in watt-hours (Wh), and power delivery, measured in watts (W). A large Wh rating does not mean every device will work: a load can exceed the station’s continuous output, a particular port’s limit, or its maximum simultaneous-load rating.

1. Inventory devices and estimate their energy use

List each device, its wattage or stated daily energy use, and how long or how often you expect to run it. For a device with a steady wattage, estimate energy as watts multiplied by hours of use. For example, a 10 W light used for five hours consumes about 50 Wh. For devices that cycle on and off, use their expected duty cycle or manufacturer-stated energy use rather than assuming they draw their full rated wattage continuously.

Sum the energy estimates for the full trip. Goal Zero illustrates the arithmetic with a 400 Wh battery powering a 100 W light for four hours; that is a calculation, not a promise of four hours of field runtime. Actual usable energy and runtime depend on the station, conversion losses, device behavior, and operating conditions. Goal Zero’s guidance also advises checking device wattage and port restrictions.

2. Check the output your devices require

Add the wattage of devices you plan to run at the same time and compare the total with the station’s continuous output rating. Check surge requirements for equipment that may briefly draw more power when starting, and confirm the limit for the specific AC, USB, or DC port you intend to use. The connector, voltage, and output type must also suit the device.

A station can have enough total stored energy for a device but still be unable to power it through the chosen port. If a device’s input requirements or a station’s port limit is unclear, verify them in the manufacturers’ specifications before relying on the setup.

3. Add a practical reserve

Do not plan around using every advertised watt-hour. Allow headroom for conversion losses, variation in device consumption, temperature effects where relevant, and days when solar input is poor. The right reserve depends on the trip and equipment; the available guidance does not establish one universal percentage.

4. Match the station to how you travel

Compare candidates on capacity, continuous and surge output, port types and limits, recharge options, weight, dimensions, operating conditions, battery chemistry, warranty, and support. A heavier unit may suit a vehicle-based trip but be impractical to carry on foot. Verify current specifications, availability, and any safety notices for the exact model; there is no single model that fits every load or travel style.

How long will the Yeti run my device?

“Yeti” is not a capacity or runtime by itself: Goal Zero uses the name for portable power stations with different specifications. For a specific Yeti model, find its capacity in Wh and the device’s actual power draw in W, then use capacity divided by load as a first-pass runtime estimate. The result is only an estimate because conversion losses, usable capacity, operating conditions, and device cycling affect real runtime. Also confirm that the device’s input and simultaneous load fit the model’s output and port limits. Goal Zero’s 400 Wh battery and 100 W light example illustrates the calculation, not a guaranteed result for every Yeti or device.

Can portable solar keep the station charged?

It can help extend a trip between other charging opportunities, but panel nameplate wattage is not a guaranteed daily energy yield. Sunlight reaching a panel changes with season, time of day, clouds, dust, haze, rain, snow, and shade, and energy is lost during conversion and storage. The U.S. Department of Energy explains these sources of variability in its solar radiation overview.

Goal Zero’s manufacturer guidance uses a “Rule of 5” to estimate that a 100 W panel could produce roughly 500 Wh on an ideal sunny day. That is an ideal-condition rule of thumb from the manufacturer, not a general field result; actual production depends on exposure and system losses. Goal Zero’s solar guidance should therefore be read alongside the DOE’s explanation of changing sunlight conditions.

Check compatibility before connecting a panel

Use only a charging path specified for the station. Check the station’s maximum solar input, supported voltage and current range, connector, and any series- or parallel-panel limits against the exact panel configuration. Do not connect a panel directly to a battery unless the system is designed for it and has the appropriate power-conversion electronics and charge control: the Australian Government’s YourHome solar guidance warns that direct connection without those components is dangerous and can permanently damage the battery.

How should you charge and use outdoor batteries safely?

Follow the station maker’s instructions for charging, storage, temperature, and handling. Health Canada advises consumers not to use swollen, dented, or otherwise damaged lithium-ion batteries, and to follow manufacturer charging instructions and use compatible replacement chargers from trusted sources. See Health Canada’s lithium-ion battery safety guidance.

Keep fuel generators separate from shelters

A fuel generator is not interchangeable with a battery station from a safety standpoint. Portable generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless gas that can kill without warning, according to the CDC’s Generator Safety Fact Sheet, reviewed August 21, 2026. Follow current manufacturer and public-health instructions for generator placement and operation; the cited fact sheet establishes the CO hazard, not a complete operating procedure. Battery stations avoid combustion exhaust at the point of use, but their batteries still require careful handling.

Can you take a power station on a flight?

For U.S. passenger air travel, FAA guidance generally limits spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks to 100 Wh per battery in carry-on baggage. Airline approval may apply for larger batteries, and carriers can impose stricter requirements. Because power stations may contain batteries larger than the usual limit, check the exact unit’s watt-hour rating and confirm current rules directly with every airline on your itinerary before traveling. FAA guidance also warns that lithium batteries can overheat and enter thermal runaway if damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, improperly packed, or affected by a defect. See the FAA PackSafe lithium-battery guidance.
