Edge AI can reduce how much raw video a security camera sends elsewhere by processing footage on or near the device. But it does not prove that video—or related metadata, telemetry, or model information—stays local or private. To judge privacy, look at the whole system: what it captures, what it transmits, where it stores data, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how it is maintained.
What edge AI does—and what it does not promise
Edge AI refers to running inference and making decisions on or near the device where data is generated. For a camera, that can mean analyzing video locally instead of sending every frame to a remote service. This may reduce some transfers of raw footage, but it is not a guarantee that all video processing or storage is local.
“Edge” also does not mean “offline.” A hybrid camera system may still connect to cloud infrastructure for software updates, orchestration, telemetry, or fallback processing. Ask the provider which information leaves the camera, which services receive it, and why. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security explains these distinctions in its 2026 guidance on securely deploying AI at the network edge.
Local processing has its own risks. Attackers may gain access to data or models on a device, and an offline or poorly connected device may receive security patches or oversight late. The Centre cautions that privacy is not guaranteed with edge AI; that is a general edge-AI observation, not a camera-specific test result.

Evaluate the camera’s full data lifecycle
Privacy depends on the system and how it is deployed, not just the location of inference. Before choosing or configuring a camera, work through these questions:
- Purpose and necessity: What specific problem does the camera address? Is recording necessary for that purpose, and can it be achieved with less capture?
- Field of view: Which people and spaces are recorded? Can you reposition or mask the camera to avoid capturing areas that do not need monitoring?
- Data categories: Does it capture video, still images, audio, or metadata? Check whether audio is enabled and whether features such as person detection create or transmit additional information.
- Data flows: What stays on the device, what goes to a local recorder, and what reaches a cloud service? Identify the recipient and purpose for each transfer.
- Storage and retention: Where are recordings stored, who controls that storage, and how long are they kept? Set the shortest retention period that meets the stated need.
- Access and protection: Who can view or export footage? Check account permissions and security controls, including encryption where the provider documents it.
- Updates and support: How are software and security updates delivered, and for how long will the device be supported? A local-only design is not a substitute for timely patching.
- Controls and oversight: Can you disable unnecessary features or restrict capture? For organizational deployments, consider how access is reviewed and how affected people can raise concerns.
These checks reflect data-protection-by-design principles: build safeguards in early, process only what is needed by default, keep information for the shortest necessary time, and restrict access to people who need it. The European Commission’s explanation of data protection by design and by default sets out those principles. The European Data Protection Board’s video-surveillance guidance also emphasizes planning technical and organizational safeguards before collecting footage, including privacy-enhancing technologies and defaults that minimize processing.

For organizations: assess purpose, impact, and bias
Organizations should evaluate surveillance before installing or expanding it, rather than treating an edge-AI feature as proof that the deployment is proportionate. An impact assessment can help determine whether the purpose is justifiable, identify privacy effects, involve people likely to be affected where appropriate, and define safeguards. It should also consider whether automated analysis could create or amplify bias.

Home cameras and legal scope depend on where they point
Rules depend on jurisdiction and use. In the UK, domestic CCTV guidance says data-protection law may apply when a home camera captures images of people outside the private domestic boundary—for example, on a street or a neighbor’s property. The guidance also covers systems such as video doorbells. This is a UK-specific rule, not a universal statement about home cameras.
Check the guidance that applies in your location and consider whether you can narrow the camera’s field of view. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office explains the domestic-camera boundary in its home CCTV guidance. Its consumer-IoT guidance also explicitly covers smart security cameras and video doorbells used by organizations processing personal information.

What the available complaint figure tells you
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission reported 157 complaints during 2024 about recording devices, including domestic CCTV and smart doorbells used by private individuals. The figure appears in the regulator’s 2024 annual report, published in 2025. It counts complaints received; it does not measure the number of devices in use, the prevalence of privacy harm, or a rate of harm.

Do not infer that a camera is “private” or cloud-free just because it advertises edge AI. Compare the documentation for each model against the same practical questions: its data flows, storage location, retention settings, access controls, available privacy restrictions, and update-support period. If the manufacturer does not explain an important behavior, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the camera keeps that information local.

Official guidance establishes system-level privacy considerations, but it does not provide a verified comparison of named consumer camera models or quantify how much privacy edge inference improves. A model-specific conclusion requires reliable documentation or independent testing of that model and its service configuration.
