If your smart TV says storage is low, start with its own storage or app-management screen: it may show which apps use space and, on some platforms, offer cache or data controls. There is no single menu or fix for every TV, and the available categories differ by platform, model, software version, and region. Unused apps are one possible source of space use, but the message alone does not identify the cause.
First, check what your TV actually reports
Find the TV’s make and model, then open its storage, device-care, or app-management settings. Look for per-app usage and note whether the TV offers separate options to remove an app, clear its cache, or clear its data. Those actions are not interchangeable: removing an app may erase its local information, while clearing data can reset its settings or sign-in state.
Menu names and available controls vary even within a platform. If you cannot find the path below, search the TV’s model-specific manual or manufacturer support page rather than assuming another model’s menu applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind the storage controls for your platform
Samsung TVs
On the 2024 model illustrated in Samsung Australia’s guide, go to Settings → All Settings → Support → Device Care → Manage Storage. Select an app and choose View Details to see the available Clear Data and Clear Cache controls. Samsung cautions that menus and app availability vary by model: Samsung: manage storage space on a TV.

Samsung Australia recommends trying cache or data clearing on compatible 2020-and-later models if ordinary app cleanup does not resolve low storage. Clearing data can remove app-specific settings or account information, so check what you will need to sign in or set up again before using it. A Smart Hub reset is more disruptive: Samsung says it initializes downloaded apps and removes app account and settings information. A TV factory reset is a later option and restores the TV’s settings to factory defaults. Follow Samsung’s model-specific instructions before resetting.
Samsung’s developer guidance says the platform automatically manages web-application cache, and that app data persists when the TV is off or an app updates but is deleted when the app is uninstalled. This describes application-local data and cache; it does not identify what is consuming storage on a particular TV: Samsung Smart TV application FAQ.

Android TV and Google TV
Google’s storage guidance covers removing downloaded apps and connecting a USB drive. If the TV recognizes a supported drive, it may offer a choice to set it up as removable storage or internal storage. Content moved to the drive may stop working when the drive is disconnected, so leave it connected if apps or other content depend on it. Support and menu wording vary by device; check the exact model’s manual before buying or formatting a drive: Google: free up or get more storage on Android TV.

Roku TVs and devices
Roku says messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” or “Insufficient memory” can reflect either an internet connection problem or low device storage. If the issue is low storage, Roku’s remedy is to remove apps. Its microSD expansion instructions apply only to Roku devices with a microSD slot—not to every Roku TV or player: Roku: fix low-memory errors.
If you want to try a restart, Roku describes a system restart as its least invasive reset method and says it does not affect settings. A restart may help some errors, but it does not establish that low storage was caused by the network or that storage has been expanded.

LG TVs
LG recommends deleting unnecessary apps to free memory. It also notes that TVs made before webOS 3.5 (2017) may not support current web standards, and that memory constraints can contribute to app problems on older products: LG: free up memory on an LG TV.
LG’s USB instructions concern browsing and playing media files, with capacity, file-format, power, and safe-ejection details that depend on the model. They do not establish that a USB drive can expand app storage: LG: connect a USB storage device to a TV.
Best Value
- Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
- Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
- Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
- Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 128GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
Can you add storage with USB or a memory card?
Only use external storage for apps when the specific TV or streaming device supports that function. Google documents USB storage setup for Android TV when the device recognizes the drive, including removable and internal-storage options. Roku’s microSD option is limited to hardware with a card slot. LG’s cited USB feature is for media playback, not app expansion. Check the model’s manual for compatibility and formatting requirements; a USB port by itself does not prove that a TV can store apps on a drive.
Quick Recap
Use the least disruptive fix first
- Inspect the TV’s storage or app-management screen. Note which apps use space and which cleanup controls are actually available.
- Remove apps you no longer use. Confirm whether uninstalling an app also removes data you want to keep; Apple explicitly says its Apple TV deletion removes app data.
- Clear cache or data only where the TV offers it. Cache and data are different controls, and clearing data can remove app settings or account information. Do not assume the same controls exist across platforms.
- Restart when appropriate. Roku identifies system restart as a low-impact option that does not affect settings, but it is distinct from removing apps or adding storage.
- Consider a platform reset only after simpler steps fail. On Samsung, Smart Hub reset affects downloaded apps and their account/settings information; a TV factory reset restores factory settings. Read the model-specific reset guidance first.
- Use external storage only if the exact device supports it. Check whether it can hold apps, whether the drive must remain connected, and what format or capacity the manual requires.
