Most smart TVs ship with picture settings that work acceptably, so the goal is not to undo the factory defaults. The five settings below are the ones most worth checking when a picture looks too smooth, too dim, stretched, or short of 4K HDR. Each one depends on your model, firmware, input, and viewing room, so if a label here does not match your menu, search your manual for the closest term.

Before you change anything

Picture quality is a combination of the TV, the content you are watching, the light in the room, reflections on the screen, the picture settings, and your own preference. LG’s official guidance makes this point directly: room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings, and the content all affect what you see. That means a setting that looks wrong in a bright living room may be correct in a dark one.

  • Photograph the current picture and energy menus before you change anything, so you can return to the starting point.
  • Change one setting at a time and judge it with content you actually watch, such as a film you know well or a live sports broadcast.
  • Do not copy numeric calibration values from forums or other people’s TVs. No single set of numbers suits every television, room, or viewer.

1. Choose a picture mode that fits the room and the content

The picture mode is the starting point for everything else. LG’s guidance says the right mode depends on the viewing environment, your preference, and the type of video, and it gives different examples for natural light, artificial light, and a dark room. Most TVs offer a cinema or filmmaker-oriented mode, which is usually the most neutral choice for films.

  1. Open the picture settings menu, usually labelled Picture or Picture Mode.
  2. Select a cinema or filmmaker-oriented mode for movies, if your TV offers one.
  3. Adjust brightness for the room. A bright, sunlit room needs more light from the screen; a dark room usually looks better with less.
  4. Watch a scene with both dark and bright areas, then adjust once more if shadows look crushed or highlights look washed out.

2. Turn motion smoothing off, or reduce it, for film

Motion smoothing inserts extra frames to make movement look fluid. It is the most common cause of the “soap opera” look, where a film looks like a cheap video recording. Samsung names this feature Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity, and its support pages describe Off and Custom choices. Samsung’s support page for motion smoothing, undated, states that most movies are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with these features. It also says live TV such as sporting events or parades is typically filmed at 30 frames per second, and that smoothing can be useful for fast-moving live content.

A practical approach follows from that:

  • Films and scripted shows: set smoothing to Off, or the lowest available level, and compare the result on a known scene.
  • Live sport: if fast motion blurs the ball or players, try a low or custom setting and see whether the blur improves without the image looking artificial.

Labels vary. LG uses its own picture clarity controls, so look for the feature that governs frame interpolation or motion processing in your menu.

3. Check energy-saving brightness before calibrating

If the screen looks unexpectedly dim, the cause may be an energy function rather than the picture mode. Samsung’s support page on energy saving mode, last updated 30 March 2022 for the UK version, documents ambient-light brightness optimisation, brightness reduction, and motion lighting. The same page explains that some of these settings can conflict with Adaptive Picture, so turning one on can change what another control does.

  • Brighter output uses more power. Whether to keep a reduction setting is a trade-off between comfort, room conditions, and energy use. You do not need to switch every energy option off to get a good picture.

4. Match the aspect ratio or picture size to the source

Aspect ratio controls how the image fills the screen. LG lists Aspect Ratio as a control that changes screen size according to the content type. The correct choice depends on how the source is formatted, so there is no single right answer.

  • Black bars at the top and bottom can be correct. Many films are letterboxed to preserve their original proportions.
  • Faces that look wide or squashed, or subtitles and logos that disappear off the edge, point to stretching or zooming. Switch to the original or fit option for that input.
  • If the picture is cropped on one device but not another, check the picture size setting for each input separately.

5. Enable the HDMI mode for 4K HDR on each input

A player, console, or streaming box that does not show 4K HDR is often limited by the TV’s HDMI setting rather than by the source itself. Roku’s support page on 4K Ultra HD and HDR settings, last updated 7 July 2026 for the Canadian version, states: “Incorrect HDMI settings on your TV or an incompatible HDMI port may cause your streaming player to only play 1080p even when your TV is capable of 4K HDR or 4K Dolby Vision.” Some capabilities are also specific to particular inputs, so the setting must be enabled on the port the device is plugged into.

  1. Confirm the source is set to output 4K and HDR, and that its own display settings show the format.
  2. On the TV, open the input or source settings for the port in use and enable the enhanced or HDMI 2.0-or-later option for that input. The label varies by brand and model, so check your manual.
  3. If a receiver or soundbar sits between the source and the TV, confirm it also supports the format. A link that does not pass 4K HDR will limit the picture regardless of the TV setting.
  4. Play a known HDR title and check the source’s display information to confirm the output.

When the cable is the problem

Roku states that its supported HDR players ship with an HDMI 2.0-compatible cable. It recommends a premium high-speed or ultra high-speed cable only where a replacement is needed, for example when an existing cable is damaged or inadequate for the chain. A new cable also cannot help if the TV port or the source does not support the target format. Most readers who have a working cable and a supported port do not need to buy one.

Optional: soundbar or receiver not playing TV audio

This is a connection fix rather than a picture setting, so check it only if sound is missing or coming from the TV speakers.

What to leave alone

Not every factory default is wrong. Picture mode, brightness, and energy options are personal choices, and a bright setting can look better in one room and worse in another. Change only what a specific symptom points to. The guidance above comes from manufacturer support pages rather than independent lab testing, so use the menu names and paths as examples of what to look for, and let your own eyes decide the final setting.
