A router setting—not a new TV or a generic blocklist—is the simplest place to start if you want to limit what your smart TV can reach on your home network. Put it on a guest or isolated network configured to block access to the internal network, then check that streaming and the local features you use still work. The headline’s “worst-behaved” label is a prompt, not a measured ranking: the evidence does not show that every smart TV is a bandwidth hog, security threat, or tracker.
What network isolation changes—and what it does not
Device isolation creates a boundary between the TV and devices on your main home network. On supported systems, the TV can keep internet access for streaming while being prevented from communicating with devices such as computers or network storage. TP-Link describes this behavior for supported Deco systems, while noting that support depends on the mesh system and firmware (TP-Link device isolation instructions). Router makers’ descriptions explain how their features are intended to work; they are not independent proof that every TV creates a security or bandwidth problem.
Isolation is not a privacy control for the TV itself. It does not, by itself, turn off viewing-data collection or prevent the TV from contacting internet services. Those concerns require separate settings on the TV.
Check whether your router can isolate the TV
- Find the TV in the router’s device list. Use the router’s app or administration page to identify the connected TV. Device names may be generic, so confirm the entry against the TV’s connection details if needed.
- Look up the feature for your exact router and firmware. Search its support documentation for “device isolation,” “guest network,” or “IoT network.” Names and available controls vary by manufacturer and model.
- Choose a network that blocks internal access. If using a guest network, confirm that the setting to access the intranet or internal network is disabled. ASUS documents this option for supported guest-network products; consult the instructions for your specific product and firmware (ASUS guest-network intranet access instructions).
- Connect the TV to that network. Use the TV’s network settings to join the isolated or guest Wi-Fi, then check in the router app that it appears on the intended network.
- Test the TV and household features. Start streaming, then try any local functions you actually rely on, such as casting, a phone-based remote, or access to shared media. Isolation can block communication with devices on the main network, so some local features may stop working.
What may stop working after isolation?
Internet streaming can continue when the router allows the isolated TV to reach the internet. Local discovery and control are different: casting, phone remote apps, and shared-media access may depend on communication across the network boundary. The effect depends on the router, TV, and feature. If a feature you need fails, check whether the router offers a narrowly scoped exception or another supported configuration; do not assume that turning off isolation is the only option.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Turn off viewing recognition separately
Open the TV’s privacy or viewing-data preferences and look for settings described as automatic content recognition (ACR), viewing information, or similar. Labels and menu paths vary by manufacturer and model. Samsung says its optional ACR may use viewing history, TV identifiers, and an IP address when enabled, and that preferences can be changed in TV settings (Samsung ACR support page). That description applies to Samsung’s feature, not to all TVs.
Testing also shows why there is no universal traffic rule to apply. RTINGS factory-reset and monitored named 2025 TV and streaming-device models, including tests across apps, HDMI devices, USB playback, consoles, and idle states; most observed traffic was encrypted. It reported identifiable ACR-related patterns on the Samsung S95F, Sony Bravia 8 II, and LG G5, with traffic changing or stopping after consent was withdrawn or the setting was switched off. On the TCL QM8K, the testers could not isolate an obvious ACR-specific flow, and blocking shared endpoints could affect unrelated services (RTINGS smart-TV data privacy research). These results describe those models and test conditions, not every TV or every network.

Why DNS blocking is not a simple substitute
DNS filtering can block a device’s requests to selected internet domains, but it is not a universal shortcut for disabling tracking. A domain may support more than one service, so blocking it can break unrelated TV features. IoT devices may also use public or encrypted DNS in ways that complicate network-level DNS policies. The IETF’s March 2025 best-current-practice document discusses these operational issues; it does not provide a consumer smart-TV blocklist (IETF RFC 9726).

Avoid relying on a generic list of domains as a guaranteed way to stop viewing-data collection.

When the router setting is not enough
If your router does not support a guest network or isolation control that blocks internal access, check its documentation or contact the manufacturer before changing advanced settings. Router security is a broader issue than smart TVs: NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, sets out recommended cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade router products, rather than studying smart TVs specifically (NIST router cybersecurity requirements).
Start with equipment you already own. A router’s feature page establishes that a capability exists for supported products, not that every model has it or that a particular new router is necessary.
