Reconnect your thermostat using the instructions for its exact brand and generation; there is no universal setup sequence. A Wi-Fi reset, a factory reset, and adding a thermostat back to its app are different actions, so don’t factory-reset it again by default. First identify the model, then follow the matching route below.
Before you start
- Find the thermostat’s brand and model or generation. If you are unsure, check its settings screen, the app, or the label on the device.
- Have the thermostat nearby, the companion app and account it uses, and the current Wi-Fi network name and password ready.
- Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your precise model. The routes below apply only to the models identified; they should not be assumed to work for other generations or brands.
Reconnect by thermostat brand
Google Nest
The steps differ by generation. For the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Nest Thermostat, use the Google Home app: select the thermostat, open Settings, choose Device information, then Wi-Fi. Google says you need to be near the thermostat while updating Wi-Fi for supported newer models.
For the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier) and Nest Thermostat E, use the thermostat itself: open Settings, choose Network, select the new network, and enter its password. See Google’s instructions for connecting Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network.

On the thermostat, open Main Menu and its Wi-Fi settings. Make sure Wi-Fi Radio is enabled, select your network, enter the password, and wait for the success message. Wi-Fi band support varies by model: ecobee’s setup guidance notes that only certain models support 5 GHz, so check its Wi-Fi setup and troubleshooting instructions for your thermostat rather than assuming every model supports the same networks.

Honeywell Home / Resideo T5, T5+, and T6 Pro WiFi
If the thermostat is registered in the Resideo app, select it, open its settings, choose Reset WiFi, and follow the prompts. If the thermostat does not appear in the app or that control is unavailable, use Add a New Device or the plus button and follow setup. These are separate routes in the model-specific Honeywell Home Wi-Fi reset instructions.
Another brand or model
Do not transfer one brand’s menu path to another thermostat. Find the exact model in the manufacturer’s official support site and follow its Wi-Fi reconnection instructions. If the device was removed from its app during a reset, look for the manufacturer’s app-enrollment or add-device procedure as well as Wi-Fi setup.

Check that reconnection worked
- Wait for the thermostat to report a successful Wi-Fi connection or show the new network as connected.
- Open the companion app and confirm that the thermostat appears online. The device’s Wi-Fi connection and its app enrollment are separate checks.
- If the thermostat connects to Wi-Fi but remains offline in the app, troubleshoot app enrollment for that model rather than repeatedly changing the Wi-Fi password.
If the thermostat still will not connect
- Recheck the network name and password, then follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps for the exact model.
- Check the router or access-point configuration against the thermostat’s documented network requirements. For ecobee, in particular, verify the model’s supported Wi-Fi band rather than assuming 5 GHz compatibility.
- For Nest, Google’s troubleshooting guidance suggests temporarily disabling Wi-Fi range extenders as a diagnostic step. If you try this, test the thermostat’s connection again with the extender off; it is not a recommendation to buy an extender. See Google’s Nest connectivity troubleshooting.
- If the manufacturer’s steps do not resolve the issue, contact its support with the model, any error message, and whether the thermostat connects to Wi-Fi but fails to appear online in the app.
Choose the right kind of reset
A Wi-Fi or network reset changes the thermostat’s network connection. A factory reset can affect broader device settings, while app re-enrollment addresses whether the thermostat is linked to the companion app. Which action is appropriate depends on the model and what was reset; follow its official instructions instead of repeating a factory reset as a general fix.
