Choose a smart camera if you want to see what is happening; choose a sensor if you mainly want to know that a specific event occurred. For many homes, they work best together: a door or motion sensor can trigger an alert, and a camera can help you check what caused it.
What each device does
Smart cameras provide visual context
Internet-connected security cameras can provide remote live video and, depending on the device and setup, audio. Some also offer recording or motion-based alerts, but features and coverage vary by model. A camera is the more direct choice when you want to inspect a room, entryway, or other monitored area from elsewhere. The FTC’s guide to securing connected devices describes what IP cameras can do and the security precautions owners should take.
Smart sensors report defined events
Sensors are designed to detect an event rather than show it. CISA guidance lists intrusion-detection options such as magnetic switches, motion sensors, glass-breakage sensors, and passive infrared sensors. A door or window sensor can indicate that an entry point opened; a motion sensor can report movement in its detection area. The alert alone does not show who or what caused the event. See CISA’s physical security guidance.

Camera or sensor: compare the trade-offs
| Consideration | Smart camera | Smart sensor |
|---|---|---|
| What you learn | Video, and potentially audio, if the device and setup support it. | Whether a defined event, such as motion or an opening, was detected. |
| Visual confirmation | Can help you inspect an alert or view the area remotely. | Does not inherently provide a visual view. |
| Detection | May include motion detection; available features vary by model and were not evaluated here. | Can be selected for a specific event type; exact behavior varies by product. |
| Privacy considerations | Captures video and possibly audio, so placement, recording settings, and account access matter. | Typically avoids capturing images, but connected-device security and data handling still matter. |
| Selection checks | Coverage and placement, power and network needs, recording method, account controls, and ongoing costs. | Event type, placement, compatibility with your system, alert routing, and power or battery needs. |
Which is right for your home?
Choose a camera when seeing the event matters
A camera is the more direct fit if you want remote live viewing or visual context after an alert. Before choosing one, consider which areas you actually need to see, whether the camera’s placement and field of view suit them, how it connects and receives power, and how it records. Check whether recording or other features involve an ongoing cost; current prices and storage terms have not been established here.

Discern from notifications that matter, so you'll know if it's your pet playing around or if someone is actually there
- 2-Way Audio Communication: Never truly leave home with the built-in 2-way audio. Use as a pet camera with phone app to comfort your pet from anywhere in the world
- Secure Local or Cloud Storage Options: Save footage continuously on up to a 256 GB microSD card (not included) or subscribe to Kasa Care for cloud storage which saves 30-day video history and provides additional benefits such as Video Summary, Activity Notifications with Snapshots and more
Choose sensors when event alerts are the priority
Sensors make sense when you want to know that an entry point opened or movement was detected without routinely capturing video. Match the sensor type to the event you care about, then check where it must be installed, whether it works with your existing system, how alerts reach you, and what power or battery requirements apply.
Use both when detection and context matter
A sensor can provide the trigger, while a camera can help you assess what happened. CISA describes cameras and alarms as complementary measures, and its physical-security checklist includes cameras, motion detection, alerts, and door/window intrusion sensors as options. That supports the idea of combining categories, not a guarantee that any particular products will work together. Verify compatibility and alert behavior before buying.

- [NOTES] Requires Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub (Not compatible with other Zigbee hubs). Requires a secured 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for Hub M2/M1S/E1/M1S Gen2 and Camera Hub G2H Pro/G2H, and 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi for Camera Hub G3.(Wired connection via Ethernet RJ45 for Hub M2 is also supported.) The Motion Sensor P1 is compatible with Aqara Home, HomeKit, Alexa, IFTTT, Home Assistant. (*Note: No light sensitivity function in HomeKit and Alexa; Please update hub firmware for optimal use.)
- [5-Year Battery Life] The Zigbee motion sensor boasts an impressive five-year battery life, maintaining reliable performance even in low temperatures or with lightning-fast detection timeouts. The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 dimensions are 1.46"D x 2.17"W x 2.76"H.
- [Configurable Detection Timeout] Easily adjust the Aqara motion sensor timeout without any hardware modifications. Through the Aqara Home app, configure the timeout from 1 to 200 seconds to save energy or capture every movement promptly. Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
- [Adjustable Viewing Angle & Detection Distance] Experience a wide detection range with a 170° field of view up to 4 meters and 150° up to 7 meters. The flexible 360° stand makes it easy to adjust the angle, so the motion sensor only triggers when needed. Choose from three sensitivity levels (high, medium, low) to fine-tune detection distance based on your setup. For a stable connection, ensure the motion sensor is placed within 393 inches (10 meters) of the Aqara Zigbee Hub.
- [Alert System and Home Automations] Set up the Aqara Home Alert System or integrate it with HomeKit and other supported systems for continuous monitoring and local sound, light alarms, and cloud notifications upon motion detection. The Zigbee motion detector seamlessly integrates into smart home automations. Easily configure "IF" and "THEN" smart automations, such as turning on lights via Aqara Smart Wall Switch or powering devices with the Aqara Smart Plug.
Privacy and security checks for connected devices
Any connected device can raise account and data-security questions; cameras add the sensitivity of recorded or live video and potentially audio. The FTC warns, “Many IP cameras are vulnerable to digital snooping.” It recommends changing default usernames and passwords, using two-factor authentication when available, keeping firmware and apps updated, enabling available security features, and disabling features you do not use. For a camera, check its access logs for unfamiliar IP addresses or unusual access times. Read the FTC’s connected-device security guidance before setting up a device.

On May 31, 2023, the FTC published a consumer alert about privacy failures involving Ring and the risk of spying or hacking into private videos. That alert is a reason to assess access and privacy controls carefully; it is not evidence that every camera brand has the same practices or vulnerabilities. Read the FTC alert.

Questions to settle before buying
- What event do you need to know about? Match a sensor to an opening, motion, or another specific event; choose a camera if visual inspection is central.
- Where will the device go? Check coverage, placement, power, and network requirements for a camera, or installation and detection area for a sensor.
- How will alerts and recordings work? Confirm alert routing, recording options, account controls, and any ongoing costs directly with the product maker or service provider.
- Will it work with what you already own? Confirm system compatibility instead of assuming devices from different products or platforms can be combined.
- What privacy exposure are you comfortable with? Consider whether you need images or audio, and review access, recording, and security settings before enabling them.
