A smart rack combines rack-level sensors and power equipment with a controller or gateway and software that collects, analyzes, and reports the data. It can help data-center teams understand power use, environmental conditions, network capacity, IT assets, and room for growth. The practical starting point is the operational question you need answered—not buying every monitoring feature at once.
This framework comes from Greg More’s “Smart Racks: The Deep End of the Pool,” published by Data Center Knowledge on May 15, 2012. More was identified as a Senior Product Marketing Manager at Raritan, so the article is best read as a vendor-affiliated industry perspective. Its goals and planning principles remain useful, but its product references are historical rather than a current buying guide.
What makes a rack “smart”?
A smart rack is not just a cabinet or a sensor. It is a system that brings monitoring and management closer to the IT equipment: instrumentation and intelligent power devices collect information, a controller or gateway connects that data to software, and the software aggregates, analyzes, and reports it.
The rack is a useful operational point because computing equipment, power consumption, environmental conditions, and communications converge there. Depending on the deployment, monitoring may cover:
#1 Best Overall

- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
- Electrical power: current, watts, voltage, volt-amps, power factor, and energy consumption.
- Environmental conditions: temperature, humidity, airflow, air pressure, and cooling capacity.
- Network capacity: information relevant to available or used network resources.
- IT assets: identity, location, ownership, configuration, connections, and maintenance.
- Capacity and change: available power and capacity for future growth, along with moves, additions, and deletions.
These categories describe the scope of the 2012 article; they are not a specification for every smart-rack deployment.
How rack-level power monitoring works
Power can be measured at different points in the distribution path, including the PDU, circuit breaker, individual line, or outlet and outlet group. The right granularity depends on the question the team needs to answer. A rack-level total may help with broad capacity planning, while outlet-level readings can help associate consumption with particular connected equipment.

- 1500VA / 1000W Pure Sine Wave UPS battery backup
- Input: NEMA 5-15P. Output: (6) NEMA 5-15R
- Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) adjusts high and low voltages to a safe level, helping preserve the life of the battery.
- APC SmartConnect is an easy to use remote monitoring feature (via a secure portal) that provides automatic notifications, firmware updates, and advanced support services. For all units purchased and/or registered after August 1, 2023, SmartConnect will be offered as a 6-month free trial
- 2U Rackmount UPS. Includes rack mount support rails
More describes an intelligent PDU as one possible place to embed processing and act as a gateway. A standalone rack controller is another possible arrangement. In either case, the controller or gateway links rack data to software for aggregation and reporting. These are architectural categories in the 2012 article, not recommendations for current models.
Measurement accuracy also needs to match the use case. More gives “+/- 1%” as an example of billing-grade energy-meter accuracy an organization might want. That is an example in the article, not a reported study result or a universal current requirement; determine the accuracy needed for your own operational or billing purposes.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Choose the first problem to solve
Begin with the decision or recurring operational issue that matters most now. For example, a team asking, “How much power capacity do I have left for data center growth?” should first establish what power data it needs and at what measurement level. An asset-tracking initiative, environmental monitoring need, or capacity concern may point to a different first capability.
More’s incremental approach is explicit: “You don’t need to implement all the possible smart rack solutions at once.” The idea is to address the highest-priority need while choosing a path that can expand without substantial rework.

Compare deployment approaches
A single-vendor system may offer more integrated operation. A multi-vendor system may fit specific requirements better, but it makes interoperability and overlap important considerations. The source offers qualitative guidance, not a scored comparison or a present-day vendor shortlist.

What a smart-rack framework does—and does not—tell you
The framework is useful for organizing rack-level monitoring goals around power, environment, network capacity, assets, capacity planning, and change management. It also highlights that instrumentation alone is not the whole system: collected data needs a path to software that can aggregate and report it.
It does not provide a current product comparison, implementation specification, or verified compatibility list. Treat its named product references as historical. A rack-mount PDU is a relevant equipment category when rack-level power metering, monitoring, or control is required, but a generic PDU is not necessarily an intelligent or metered one. Specify the required metering level, outlet control, power configuration, and compatibility for the deployment rather than assuming those capabilities.
