If Alexa cannot control a smart light, first check whether the bulb responds in its maker’s app. If it works there, focus on Alexa’s connection to the light—often its linked skill. If it fails in both places, check power and network access before reconnecting or resetting the bulb.
Start with power, then test the manufacturer’s app
- Check power. Make sure the bulb is switched on and its fixture or wall switch supplies power. Alexa cannot control a bulb that is off or disconnected from power.
- Try the manufacturer’s app. Use the app that was used to set up the light and issue a direct on/off command. This separates a problem with Alexa’s link from a problem reaching the light itself.
If the light works in its app but not through Alexa
The bulb and its connection are responding, so troubleshoot the Alexa integration. Amazon’s “Alexa Isn’t Controlling Smart Home Devices” guidance recommends removing and then adding the relevant skill again in the Alexa app when the manufacturer’s app works but Alexa does not.
For a third-party Wi-Fi bulb that is not Matter-certified, Amazon says to complete setup in the manufacturer’s app before connecting it to Alexa. Alexa may then use the manufacturer’s skill; linking the manufacturer account during setup can activate that skill automatically. The exact linking screens can vary by product.

If the manufacturer’s app cannot reach the light
Investigate the bulb’s power and connection before changing the Alexa skill. Check the light’s status and internet connection in the manufacturer’s app. Then verify that the home router is working by testing another connected device. Amazon recommends checking the device’s network and router as part of troubleshooting connection problems.

Check which network the Alexa app lists for the device, where that information is available. Amazon notes that Wi-Fi changes in the Alexa app apply only to Amazon and Matter devices; for other third-party Wi-Fi products, manage Wi-Fi through the manufacturer’s app.
Check the connection rule that fits the bulb
Smart lights do not all connect in the same way. Use the protocol and setup path for the specific product rather than applying Wi-Fi instructions to every bulb.

These are protocol-specific setup and proximity conditions, not a single range or network rule for every smart bulb. Consult the product’s setup instructions to confirm its connection type and compatible controller.

- Disconnect and set up the light again in Alexa. For a previously connected bulb, Amazon recommends disconnecting it in the Alexa app and completing setup again.
- Check app control and the skill. Test the light in its manufacturer’s app. If that works but Alexa still cannot control it, reactivate or remove and add the associated skill, as applicable.
- Reset only after simpler checks fail. Amazon’s guidance recommends resetting the smart-home device and Alexa device if reconnection does not work. Follow the bulb maker’s instructions for the exact model: reset sequences vary, so do not assume a particular power-cycle or button sequence.
Amazon’s troubleshooting pages are “Alexa Isn’t Controlling Smart Home Devices”, “My Smart Home Device Doesn’t Connect to Alexa”, and “Checking Wi-Fi Connectivity on Smart Home Devices.” App labels and model-specific reset directions can change; use the current instructions for the exact bulb and Alexa device.
