My smart home should have kept working during a Google outage. It didn’t, so I rebuilt it around a different principle: essential device control should happen inside the home, not depend on a chain of internet services.
The important distinction is not simply Google Home versus another platform. It is whether a command needs the internet to reach a device. That depends on the device, integration, and feature being used.
Why a Google outage can interrupt smart-home control
Some Google Home integrations rely on a cloud-to-cloud route. In Google’s example for a non-Matter “Works with Google Home” light, a request goes from a Nest Mini to Nest cloud services, then to the manufacturer’s partner cloud, and back to the home. If a required service or internet connection is unavailable, that route can break.

The failure point varies: the device, home internet connection, Google’s service, the manufacturer’s cloud, or the link between them may be involved. Google describes this example in its Matter preparation guide.

What a more resilient smart-home design changes
Instead of sending every device command out to the internet and back, a local design puts a controller on the home network and has it communicate with devices over local networking or radio protocols. Home Assistant lists Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome as local protocols that run on the home network. Its reliability FAQ says automations using these protocols can continue when internet access or a vendor cloud is down. That is Home Assistant’s description of its platform, not independent testing of every device or configuration.
The local route still has dependencies: the controller needs power, the home network or relevant radio network needs to work, and devices must be compatible and configured to operate locally. An integration that calls a vendor cloud remains dependent on that cloud, even if the controller itself is local.

Does Matter work without the internet?
Supported Matter commands issued from inside the home can travel over the home network directly to a device rather than through the internet cloud. Google identifies Wi-Fi and Thread as supported network paths in its Matter guide. Google’s Google Home Matter setup documentation draws the boundary clearly: local commands from home and cloud-connected commands when you are away are different cases.
Matter is not a blanket offline switch. In Google Home, adding Matter devices and providing local control requires a Matter-enabled hub. A Matter-over-Thread setup also needs a Thread Border Router; Google’s setup article lists IPv6 on the home Wi-Fi network as a requirement. Check the exact device and hub compatibility before buying or migrating anything, since Matter support does not make every feature or integration local.

Google Home with Matter or a local controller?
| Approach | What can work locally | What still depends on the cloud | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home with supported Matter devices | Supported in-home Matter commands over the home network, with a Matter-enabled hub. | Google documents remote commands from away from home as connecting to its cloud over the internet. | Keeps control within Google Home, but local behavior depends on supported devices, hub requirements, and the feature being used. |
| Home Assistant with local protocols | Home Assistant says local Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome devices and automations can continue without internet or vendor-cloud access. | Cloud-linked integrations and optional remote or voice features may still need internet services. | Uses user-owned hardware and local protocols, but requires maintaining the controller, network, device compatibility, and any integrations. |
The comparison is about architecture, not a measured ease-of-use or reliability ranking. Home Assistant’s reliability FAQ describes local protocols and local operation; its platform documentation describes software running on user-owned hardware and local data storage.

A device responding locally does not prove that voice recognition, a phone app away from home, or every routine will work offline. Voice requests may require a separate online service to interpret speech; remote access by definition requires a path back into the home. Treat these as separate layers when deciding what must survive an outage.

For each essential action, identify the command source, the controller, and the path to the device. If any required step leaves the home network, that action may be unavailable when the internet or an outside service fails. Keep a direct local control method for devices where that matters.

Quick Recap
What I would verify before relying on an outage-ready setup
- Which exact devices and integrations require a vendor cloud, rather than assuming all equipment in one ecosystem behaves alike.
- Whether the controller, network equipment, and radios remain powered and reachable during the outage you want to withstand.
- Which automations execute locally and which depend on cloud services.
- Whether any voice, away-from-home, notification, or account feature is an essential dependency or merely a convenience.
- For Matter devices, whether the specific hub and network type meet the device’s requirements, including a Thread Border Router for Thread devices.
