The small openings beside a laptop webcam are often built-in microphone ports, but nearby features can also be a camera status light, a sliding privacy shutter, or optional infrared hardware. Their appearance alone is not enough to identify them: layouts and configurations vary, even within a model family. Check the labeled display or front view in the manual for your exact laptop model.
What might be beside the webcam?
Several different components can sit close together in a laptop’s display bezel. A hole, light, or movable cover may look similar at a glance, but each serves a different purpose.
Microphone ports
A small opening may let sound reach one or more built-in microphones for calls or recording. For example, Dell’s Pro 14 Essential manual labels microphones on both sides of the camera area and notes that some plastic-chassis configurations have only one. HP also identifies internal microphones in its components guide. So, a pair of openings does not prove that every laptop has two microphones.

Camera status light
A nearby dot may be an indicator rather than an opening. Dell and HP document camera status lights, and HP says its camera light is on when the camera is in use. On Mac laptops, Apple says the camera indicator glows green when the camera is active; Apple Support also states that the camera cannot activate without its indicator light turning on.

Privacy shutter
Some laptops have a sliding cover that physically blocks the lens. Lenovo calls its ThinkPad version ThinkShutter and describes it as “a sliding cover next to the camera lens.” Its support page advises checking the User Guide to see whether a particular system includes one. Dell and HP also document camera shutters or covers, with availability varying by model or configuration.
Optional infrared hardware
Some configurations include infrared camera components alongside the regular camera. Dell’s Pro 5 16 front-view documentation lists optional IR components in the camera area. They are not present on every laptop.

How to identify the feature on your laptop
- Find the exact model. Use the model name or service/model number shown on the laptop or in its system information. A product-family name alone may not distinguish configuration differences.
- Open the manufacturer’s official manual. Search for that exact model on the manufacturer’s support site, then open its owner’s manual, user guide, or setup documentation.
- Compare the labeled display or front view. Look for labels such as microphone, camera status light, privacy shutter, or IR sensor. Check whether the manual marks a component as optional or configuration-dependent.
- Ask the manufacturer if the diagram is inconclusive. Give support the exact model or service/model number so it can identify the right configuration.
Do not push a pin or other object into an unidentified opening. It may be a microphone port or another functional component, and the cited manuals do not recommend probing it.

Check before adding a camera cover
A built-in shutter is not universal; consult the exact model’s guide rather than assuming your laptop has one. An external cover also needs a device-specific clearance check. Apple warns that a cover can damage a Mac laptop’s display when the lid is closed; for Mac laptops, Apple says to remove a camera cover thicker than 0.1 mm before closing the computer. That guidance is specific to Mac laptops and is not a universal thickness limit for other devices. See Apple’s camera-cover guidance.
