Indian Railways Sleeper Class (SL) is a non-air-conditioned coach with an assigned sleeping berth. Your ticket reserves a place in a particular coach and berth, while basic fittings such as fans, lights, cushioned berths, luggage racks and wash basins are part of the coach design. Bedding and meals are different: neither should be assumed to be included with every Sleeper Class ticket. Check the specific train and service before you travel, and pack an optional personal sleep layer if you want one.
What Sleeper Class is—and what it is not
Sleeper Class is Indian Railways’ standard non-AC sleeping accommodation for longer journeys. The coach is intended for overnight or extended travel, so a passenger receives an assigned berth rather than only a conventional seated place. The exact coach design, fittings and condition can differ between trains and between individual coaches.
“Sleeper” describes the accommodation type, not a promise of hotel-style service. It does not mean the coach is air-conditioned, that a bedroll is automatically supplied, or that food is included in the fare. Those assumptions cause most avoidable surprises.
Non-air-conditioned travel
Ordinary SL coaches do not have air-conditioning. Ventilation is provided through the coach’s fans and windows, so temperature and airflow vary with the weather, route, station stops and the condition of the particular coach. If you need controlled cooling, Sleeper Class is the wrong category; choose an AC class when booking instead.

Do not confuse ordinary SL with other services
This guide concerns ordinary Indian Railways Sleeper Class. It does not describe AC 3-tier, luxury trains or the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper service. Those products can have different layouts, equipment, bedding policies and catering arrangements.
How berths work
Your ticket normally identifies the train, date, coach and berth allocation. Use those details to find the coach position on the station display or railway enquiry system, then board the coach shown on the ticket. Confirm the printed or electronic berth number after boarding rather than relying on a general diagram found online.
Berth types and the coach layout
Sleeper coaches use sleeping berths arranged in bays, with side berths in the passage area on many designs. Labels can include lower, middle, upper, side-lower and side-upper berths, but the arrangement is coach- and design-specific. Indian Railways technical references document sleeper berth dimensions and furnishing schedules; they do not justify claiming that every train has an identical berth count or layout.
A lower berth is at floor level, a middle berth is raised for sleeping and an upper berth is highest in the bay. Side berths are alongside the aisle. In practice, passengers may use the lower seating area during the day and raise or lower berths according to the coach design and the group’s agreement. Follow the berth fittings and instructions in your coach, and respect the passenger whose name appears against a berth on the reservation chart.

Finding your place at the station
- Read the coach code and berth number on your ticket or reservation message.
- Check the station’s coach-position indicator or ask railway staff where that coach will stop.
- Board the marked coach and verify the coach number before stowing luggage.
- Find the berth number inside the coach; reservation charts posted near the entrance can help when an allocation is unclear.
- If your name, coach or berth does not match, speak to the train conductor or other authorised railway staff rather than moving into an unassigned place.
Privacy and personal space
Ordinary Sleeper Class is an open coach. Do not expect a personal cabin, privacy curtain, reading lamp or guaranteed quiet. Even when a berth is assigned for sleeping, the aisle, doors and shared bays remain public spaces. Earplugs, an eye mask and a compact bag that can be secured to the berth or luggage rack are practical choices for travellers who are sensitive to light, noise or movement.
Facilities you can reasonably expect
Railway technical and training references list several basic fittings for sleeper coaches. These are designed provisions, not a guarantee that every item will be present, clean or working on a particular trip.
| Facility | What it means in practice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fans and ventilation | Non-AC airflow through coach fans and windows. | Airflow and operating condition vary by coach, weather and route. |
| Lights | General coach lighting for boarding and movement at night. | Individual reading lights are not guaranteed. |
| Cushioned berths | Berths are furnished for sitting and sleeping. | Padding, upholstery and cleanliness can differ between coaches. |
| Luggage racks | Overhead or designated storage for bags. | Space is shared; keep valuables secured and within sight. |
| Wash basins | Basic washing facilities at coach ends. | Water supply and cleanliness are operational matters on the day. |
| Charging outlets | Railway training material describes charging points in passenger coaches. | Availability, location, power and working condition are not guaranteed for every berth or trip. |
Charging devices safely
Carry a charged power bank if your phone is essential for tickets, payments or emergency contact. Treat a coach outlet as a convenience, not as your only power source. Use a normal, undamaged charger, avoid leaving a device unattended in a busy coach and do not overload a socket with an unsafe adapter.
Toilets and water
Wash basins and toilet facilities are located at coach ends. Carry hand sanitiser, tissues and a small amount of drinking water for the journey, especially when your route has long stretches between stations. Station facilities may be easier to use during a longer halt, but never assume the scheduled stop will be extended.

Bedding: what to bring and what to verify
Do not assume that an ordinary Sleeper Class ticket includes a blanket, sheets or pillow. The available official material does not establish a current nationwide bedroll entitlement for every SL passenger. A Railway Board release discusses bedroll provisions in particular contexts, which is not the same as a class-wide rule.
How to handle an uncertain bedroll policy
- Check the current information for your exact train and journey date through the railway or booking service you are using.
- If bedding is mentioned, read whether it applies to your coach, route and service rather than to another class.
- Ask onboard railway staff only for confirmation of the service available on that train; do not treat an informal promise as a universal policy.
- Pack a compact personal sleep layer if you prefer not to depend on uncertain provision.
Optional personal sleep layer
A lightweight travel sheet or sleeping-bag liner can fit in a small daypack and provide a familiar layer between you and the berth. It is optional, not mandatory railway equipment, and it is not proof that Railway bedding is absent on your particular service. Choose one that is easy to pack and wash; avoid treating it as a substitute for checking the train’s actual arrangement.
Meals, drinks and IRCTC eCatering
Meals are not automatically bundled with an ordinary Sleeper Class fare. Some trains or stations may have food services, but a Sleeper Class ticket alone does not establish that a pantry meal will be available.

What eCatering does
IRCTC eCatering is an ordering option for packaged food delivered to a passenger’s seat or berth at a selected station, subject to the service’s availability and terms. It is not evidence that every train carries a pantry car or that food is included in the ticket price.

- Check the official IRCTC eCatering service for your train, route and journey date.
- Select an available meal and a delivery station offered for that train.
- Enter the requested passenger, coach and berth details accurately.
- Review the order terms, payment details and the delivery station before confirming.
- Be at your assigned berth while the train is stationary at the selected station. Delivery depends on your availability during that stop.
- If the train is delayed or your location changes, use the service’s current support or order instructions; delivery is conditional, not guaranteed regardless of delay or missed contact.
Questions passengers commonly ask
What is eCatering?
It is IRCTC’s pre-order and delivery service for eligible train journeys. It lets a passenger order packaged food for delivery at a selected station when the train and route are supported.
Which meal can I book?
Only meals shown as available for your train, route, station and date can be booked. Menus, vendors, prices and availability can change, so use the live service details rather than an old menu or a generic claim about railway food.
Will I get the booked meal if the train is delayed?
Not automatically. The eCatering terms make delivery dependent on the passenger being available at the seat or berth while the train is stationary at the selected station. A delay, altered timing or missed stop can affect fulfilment; check the current order terms and service instructions.

Indian Railways’ Year Book 2023–24 reports an average of 55,118 meals per day through IRCTC eCatering during that report period. This is an annual-report activity figure, not a current daily guarantee and not evidence that food is available on your particular Sleeper Class train.

What to pack for a Sleeper Class journey
- Ticket or reservation message, identification required by your booking and a phone with an offline copy of the details.
- Optional travel sheet or sleeping-bag liner, plus a light layer suited to the weather.
- Small padlock or cable for securing luggage, while keeping valuables with you.
- Drinking water, tissues, hand sanitiser and any medicines you may need during the trip.
- Charged phone, charging cable and, if important, a power bank.
- Eye mask or earplugs if you need help sleeping in a shared coach.
- Snacks if you do not want to depend on onboard or station food availability.
Keep the bag you need overnight within reach. Large luggage should not block the aisle, doors or access to another passenger’s berth.
Before boarding: a practical checklist
- Confirm that the ticket says Sleeper Class (SL), not an AC class or another service.
- Check the train number, boarding station, destination, date and coach/berth allocation.
- Look up the current coach position and allow time to reach the platform.
- Verify whether any food service or eCatering option is available for your route.
- Decide whether to pack an optional sleep layer because bedding is not a class-wide certainty.
- Charge your phone and save essential booking information for periods with weak connectivity.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Sleeper” means air-conditioned
SL is non-AC. Check the class code before paying and again before boarding.
Assuming a bedroll is included
There is no established nationwide rule that every ordinary SL passenger receives bedding. Verify the named train’s current service and bring an optional layer if useful.
Assuming a meal is part of the fare
Food must be available through a train or ordering service; it is not established by the Sleeper Class ticket itself. Check eCatering and carry a backup snack.
Relying on a charging point
Charging outlets are described in railway training material, but an individual outlet may be unavailable or faulty. Start with a charged phone and carry backup power.
Using an old coach diagram as a promise
Technical schedules describe designed fittings and berth dimensions, not the exact condition or identical layout of every coach. Use your ticket and the coach’s actual signage.
How to decide whether Sleeper Class suits your trip
| Your priority | What to check before booking | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost overnight berth | SL availability and the assigned berth. | Non-AC conditions and shared space. |
| Reliable cooling | Choose an AC category instead of SL. | Different fare and class rules. |
| Guaranteed bedding | Confirm the exact train’s current offer. | Pack a personal sleep layer if uncertain. |
| Food during the journey | Check eCatering availability at a suitable station. | Remain at the berth during the delivery stop and carry backup food. |
| Uninterrupted device use | Do not depend on a particular outlet. | Charge beforehand and carry backup power. |
Bottom line for first-time passengers
Sleeper Class gives you a reserved berth in a non-air-conditioned coach with basic railway fittings such as fans, lights, cushioned berths, luggage storage and wash basins. The practical variables—temperature, cleanliness, working sockets, bedding and food—depend on the specific train and service on your date. Verify your coach and berth, treat bedding and meals as items to confirm rather than assume, and pack a small personal sleep layer and backup essentials when they improve your comfort.
