To set up Sleep on an iPhone, create a recurring schedule in Health. Choose the days, bedtime, wake time, sleep goal, and—if you want—an alarm. You can then connect that schedule to Sleep Focus, which limits notifications and changes selected screens during your sleep period. An Apple Watch is optional: the iPhone can run the schedule, alarm, and Focus features without one.
The important distinction is that these are related but separate tools. Health stores the sleep routine, Sleep Focus controls interruptions, the Clock app provides independent alarms, and Apple Watch supplies optional sleep measurements. The labels below follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide instructions labeled iOS 27; wording and screen placement can vary by software version or region.
What “Sleep” on iPhone actually includes
Apple’s Sleep features are spread across Health, Focus, Clock, and (optionally) Apple Watch. Knowing which component does what prevents the most common setup mistakes.
| Feature | Primary purpose | How long it applies | Hardware needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health sleep schedule | Stores your target bedtime, wake time, active days, sleep goal, wind-down, reminders, and schedule alarm | Recurring days, or one next wake-up when edited under Next | iPhone |
| Sleep Focus | Reduces notifications and changes allowed people, apps, and selected Lock Screen or Home Screen behavior | Usually follows the Health schedule; it can also be switched manually | iPhone |
| Clock alarm | Plays an alarm at a chosen time independently of the Health schedule | One time or repeating days | iPhone |
| Apple Watch sleep tracking | Records sleep data and provides Apple’s Sleep Score when requirements are met | Data from nights when the watch is worn and configured for tracking | Paired Apple Watch, worn overnight |
A schedule alarm is not the same as Sleep Focus. You can have a Clock alarm without enabling Sleep Focus, and you can use Sleep Focus without relying on its schedule alarm.

How do I set up Sleep on my iPhone?
Use the Health app’s setup flow for a routine that repeats. The first-time bedtime and wake-up times entered while setting up Sleep Focus can apply to the next occurrence and repeat only once; they are not a substitute for a recurring Health schedule.
- Open Health.
- Tap Browse, then choose Sleep.
- On the Sleep page, tap Sleep, then Get Started and Continue.
- Choose a Sleep Goal. This is the amount of sleep you want to target, not a medical recommendation.
- Edit the schedule’s active days. A day shown as active receives that schedule; remove days that should not use it.
- Set the bedtime and wake time.
- Decide whether to use the schedule alarm. If enabled, configure its sound, volume, vibration, and snooze controls.
- Review the settings and save the schedule.
After saving, Health becomes the place to manage the routine. If your week has different patterns, create more than one schedule—for example, one for weekdays and another for weekends—instead of trying to force one time range across every day.
The first-time setup trap
Apple documents a distinction between entering times during Sleep Focus setup and creating a recurring schedule in Health. Times entered in the former flow can set the next bedtime and wake-up occurrence and repeat only once. If you expect the times to recur every Monday through Friday or every day, complete the Health path above and verify the active-day selections.
Add schedules or edit an existing routine
Health keeps the recurring controls together under Full Schedule & Options.
- Open Health and go to Browse > Sleep.
- Tap Full Schedule & Options.
- Choose the existing schedule to edit, or use the option to add another schedule.
- Set the active days, bedtime, wake time, and alarm options for that schedule.
- Save the changes.
An edit made to the schedule itself changes every active day covered by that schedule. Use this for a permanent change, such as moving your weekday bedtime from 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Keep separate schedules when the pattern is genuinely different, such as school or work nights versus weekends.

Use the Next entry rather than editing the recurring schedule.

- In Health > Browse > Sleep, open the schedule controls.
- Find the next bedtime or wake-up entry labeled Next.
- Edit that occurrence’s bedtime or wake time.
- Save the change.
Apple says this temporary change affects the next wake-up and then the normal schedule resumes. This is the safer choice for a late night, an early flight, or a one-off weekend event because it does not rewrite every future day.

Add another schedule when you need a repeating day pattern that cannot be represented cleanly by the first one. A weekday schedule and a weekend schedule are the straightforward example. Check the active-day selections after adding it so two schedules are not unintentionally assigned to the same day.
Set a sleep goal, wind-down, and reminders
The same Full Schedule & Options area contains the supporting settings that shape the routine.
Sleep Goal
Your Sleep Goal expresses how much sleep you intend to obtain. It helps Health present the schedule and later sleep information against a target. It does not guarantee that you will fall asleep at the selected bedtime, and Apple does not present it as a diagnosis or treatment.
Wind Down
Wind Down can begin from 15 minutes to 3 hours before the scheduled bedtime. Sleep Focus starts when the wind-down interval begins, not when the bedtime itself arrives. Choose an interval that matches when you want notifications and other distractions reduced.
Sleep Reminders
Sleep Reminders are managed in the schedule options. They can prompt you as the planned bedtime approaches. A reminder is separate from the wake alarm: turning reminders on does not itself create an alarm, and changing the reminder timing does not change the scheduled wake time.
Rank #3
Configure Sleep Focus without changing the schedule
Sleep Focus is the interruption-control layer associated with the Health schedule. It can silence or limit notifications, allow selected contacts or apps, and use different Lock Screen or Home Screen arrangements. It does not collect sleep measurements by itself.
Customize who and what can notify you
- Open Settings.
- Tap Focus, then Sleep.
- Choose the people and apps that may notify you while Sleep Focus is active.
- Adjust the Lock Screen and Home Screen behavior offered on that page, along with the other Focus options you want.
- Leave Settings when the configuration is complete; the choices apply the next time Sleep Focus starts.
Permit only the contacts and apps whose alerts you genuinely need overnight. If a person or app is missing from your allowed list, the notification may be held until Sleep Focus ends, depending on the other Focus settings you selected.
Turn Sleep Focus on or off manually
To start it immediately, open Control Center, tap Focus, and choose Sleep. Repeat the path and tap Sleep again to turn it off. Manual activation is useful for an unplanned nap or an evening when you want fewer interruptions but do not want to alter the Health schedule.

Keep the schedule but stop automatic Sleep Focus
If you want the Health routine and its alarm to remain but do not want Sleep Focus to start automatically, open Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, then turn off Use Schedule for Sleep Focus. Apple Support describes the result this way: “When this setting is off, your sleep schedules remain in effect, but your Sleep Focus doesn’t automatically turn on.” You can still turn Sleep Focus on manually from Control Center.
This setting is specific to Sleep Focus. Other Focus modes can have their own manual or scheduled activation; do not assume that every Focus mode is linked to the Health sleep schedule.
Understand the two kinds of iPhone alarms
The alarm attached to a Health sleep schedule and an alarm in Clock solve different problems.
Rank #4
| Characteristic | Health sleep schedule alarm | Clock alarm |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is configured | Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options | Clock app |
| Repeating pattern | Follows the active days of the sleep schedule | Can be one-time or repeating on selected days |
| Sleep Focus behavior | Can be associated with the schedule and its settings | Does not turn on Sleep Focus |
| Sound choices documented by Apple | Sound, volume, vibration, and snooze controls; a song cannot be selected | Can use a song as the alarm sound |
| Best use | A wake time that belongs to your sleep routine | A separate reminder, backup alarm, or event-specific wake-up |
To adjust the schedule alarm, return to the Health schedule and change its alarm controls. To create an independent alarm, open Clock, tap Alarms, and add or edit an alarm there. Setting a Clock alarm does not activate Sleep Focus, so an alarm by itself is not evidence that Focus will run.

You do not need an Apple Watch to create a schedule, use the schedule alarm, or configure Sleep Focus. The watch is an optional extension for collecting sleep data while you wear it.
Enable tracking
If an Apple Watch is already paired during Sleep setup, Health can offer the watch as a tracking option. You can also enable the option after pairing the watch. Follow the on-screen Sleep Tracking controls for the watch and confirm that tracking is enabled before going to bed.
Prepare the watch each night
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 30 percent before bed, as specified in Apple’s current support instructions.
- Wear it while sleeping for at least one hour to receive sleep data.
- Keep the watch paired with the iPhone and configured for Sleep Tracking.
The one-hour requirement and 30-percent charge are device-use requirements, not measurements of sleep quality. If the watch was not worn long enough or ran out of power, the iPhone may still show the schedule and alarm while lacking that night’s watch-derived data.
How Apple’s Sleep Score is calculated
Apple describes Sleep Score as a 0–100 rating based on the previous night. Its documented weighting is:

| Interruptions | 20 | Interruptions during the night |
| Total | 100 | The prior night’s Sleep Score range |
This is Apple’s scoring method, not a clinical diagnosis or an independent measure of health. Treat it as a summary of the data Apple Watch recorded under those conditions, not as a reason to change medical care or infer a disorder.

Choose the right feature for a specific need
- You want a repeating bedtime and wake time: create or edit a schedule in Health and select its active days.
- You need fewer alerts while sleeping: configure Sleep Focus and decide which people and apps can break through.
- You need a one-night adjustment: edit the occurrence under Next; the recurring schedule will resume after that wake-up.
- You want a separate reminder or a song: use a Clock alarm. It will not turn on Sleep Focus.
- You want sleep measurements: add Apple Watch tracking, charge the watch to at least 30 percent, and wear it for at least one hour.
- You want the schedule but no automatic Focus: disable Use Schedule for Sleep Focus in Health’s full schedule options.
Troubleshoot common Sleep setup problems
The bedtime repeats only once
Check whether you entered the times during an initial Sleep Focus setup rather than saving a recurring schedule in Health. Open Health’s Sleep section, complete the recurring schedule flow, and verify the active days.
Sleep Focus does not start automatically
Open Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options and check Use Schedule for Sleep Focus. If it is off, the schedule and alarm can still work while Sleep Focus remains manual. Also check that the schedule actually includes the current day and that the wind-down or bedtime has not been changed for the next occurrence.
A one-night change affected future nights
You probably edited the full schedule instead of the Next occurrence. Reopen the recurring schedule and restore the intended days and times, then use Next for future temporary changes.

The alarm is present but there is no song option
That is expected for a Health sleep schedule alarm: Apple says a song cannot be selected there. Create or edit a Clock alarm if a song is required.
Sleep data is missing
Confirm that Sleep Tracking is enabled on the paired Apple Watch, that the watch had at least 30 percent charge before bed, and that it was worn for at least one hour. These conditions affect watch data collection but do not prevent the iPhone’s schedule from existing.
A practical setup that avoids conflicts
- Create the recurring weekday and weekend schedules in Health first.
- Set the Sleep Goal, wind-down interval, reminders, and schedule alarm while reviewing each schedule’s active days.
- Open Settings > Focus > Sleep and allow only essential people and apps.
- Decide whether Sleep Focus should start automatically with the schedule. If not, disable Use Schedule for Sleep Focus in Health.
- Add a Clock alarm only when you need an independent alarm, a one-off event, or a song.
- If using Apple Watch, enable Sleep Tracking, charge it to at least 30 percent, and wear it for at least one hour overnight.
- For travel, late nights, or early appointments, change the Next occurrence rather than rewriting the recurring schedule.
This arrangement keeps each decision in the app designed for it: Health for the routine, Focus for interruptions, Clock for independent alarms, and Apple Watch for optional measurements.
