If your Sleep Number bed will not change firmness, first check the control connection, pump power, and air hoses. If the display changes but the mattress does not feel different, or it adjusts and then softens again, treat that as a separate airflow or air-loss problem rather than assuming the displayed number confirms the bed reached that setting.
First identify what is—and is not—adjusting
Press inflate or deflate and note what happens: whether the remote or app responds, whether its displayed setting changes, whether the mattress feel changes, and whether one side or both sides are affected. Record any error code and the bed or remote generation. The bed’s air chambers hold air; the pump changes chamber pressure, and hoses connect the chambers to the control system. A control response and a physical firmness change are therefore separate clues. Sleep Number’s overview of the smart mattress components explains that arrangement.
Work through the basic checks
1. Compare the remote and app, if your bed supports both
Try another control action and see whether the remote display responds. On supported smart beds, compare the remote with the Sleep Number app: if the app adjusts the bed but the remote does not, the remote or its connection is a likely focus; if neither control works, check the bed’s power and connections. For smart beds purchased from 2022 to the present with Smart Control, Sleep Number recommends reseating the remote batteries, restarting the bed, and running the app’s Quick System Test if available. Restart in the app through Smart Bed settings; if you cannot use the app, unplug the bed for 20 seconds. Check that the pump or control system is plugged into a working outlet and that its power or indicator lights are on. For a traditional remote displaying ER, E, or E0, a power interruption or communication problem may be involved. Check the plug and outlet, replace the remote battery with a fresh one if applicable, and use the restart procedure for that specific system. 3. Inspect accessible hoses and fittings
Trace the hoses between the pump and the air chamber, looking for tight bends, kinks, loose fittings, visible cracks, or damaged or missing O-rings. Straighten a kink and make sure accessible fittings are seated securely. Sleep Number says beds sold after 2016 have a chamber connector that can be disconnected by pressing its tab while gently pulling; reconnect it securely. Do not force a fitting or lift a heavy bed on your own. Contact Sleep Number if a hose or connector is broken or damaged. Its adjustment troubleshooting guide describes the connector check.
4. Retry the adjustment
Try changing the setting after checking power, controls, and hoses. Some remotes require pressing Enter to start the adjustment. If the control accepts the change but the mattress does not respond, note that mismatch and any code; a changed display alone does not establish that the air chamber reached the selected firmness. The manufacturer’s adjustment guide covers both a setting mismatch and a bed that will not adjust.

Interpret error messages for your remote generation
Error meanings are not universal across Sleep Number systems. Match the code to the remote or app you have, and use that system’s instructions rather than trying a reset or pairing sequence from another generation.
- E1: On the systems covered by the cited guide, this means the remote has lost its connection with the Firmness Control System. Check that the bed has power, use the remote near the bed, and try fresh batteries if needed. Follow the reconnect steps for your model; contact support if the error remains. - E2: On a 360 remote, this indicates an inflation error: the mattress is taking longer than expected to move between settings. A loose, kinked, or partly disconnected hose can restrict airflow. See 360 remote error guidance.
- ER, E, or E0: On traditional remotes purchased before 2017, these codes can indicate lost communication after a power interruption or an incompletely connected or powered control system. - App error e024: Sleep Number describes this as the app being unable to communicate with the bed pump or SleepIQ processor connection. Consult the applicable system guidance before changing configuration or contacting service. App error e024 help.
If a wireless remote shows only part of the setting, a low battery may be responsible. Replace the battery and check the display again. Sleep Number’s partial-display guidance.

If the bed adjusts, then loses firmness
A bed that initially reaches a setting but repeatedly softens needs the separate air-loss checks; changing the setting again does not identify where the air is going. Start with pump power and hose connections. On applicable smart beds, turn Responsive Air off temporarily to rule out automatic adjustments.
Sleep Number’s air-loss guide also describes an isolation test using white chamber caps. The caps help determine whether the air loss follows a chamber or remains associated with pump output; they do not repair a bed that will not adjust. The guide recommends monitoring the result over 1–3 nights. It says caps are stored inside the bed or base, or may be obtained from a Sleep Number store or online. Check that the caps fit your system and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Read the air-loss test instructions.

When to contact Sleep Number
Contact Sleep Number if the pump has power and the hoses appear secure but the bed still will not respond, if an error persists after the model-specific steps, or if you find damaged parts. Have the bed model or generation, error message, steps already tried, and whether one or both sides are affected ready; these details help support narrow down the fault. Avoid ordering a remote, hose, O-ring, or control component before identifying the system and the failed part. The manufacturer’s adjustment guide lists the information to provide when requesting help.
