Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025. Its transition route was Teams Free, where signing in with Skype credentials made eligible chats and contacts available. But the move did not include every type of content, and it did not replace Skype’s paid phone-number or calling services. As of October 8, 2026, Microsoft’s stated data-export request period and Skype Number port-out window have both passed.
What happened to consumer Skype?
Microsoft ended consumer Skype on May 5, 2025, affecting free and paid Skype users. Skype for Business was not included in that retirement. Microsoft directed consumer users to Teams Free as the transition route. Microsoft’s retirement FAQ explains the change and subsequent updates.
What happens to your Skype account, contacts, and chats?
Sign in to Teams Free with your Skype credentials
Microsoft said users could sign in to Teams Free with their Skype credentials; a separate new Teams Free account was not required. Eligible contacts and chats would then be available there. Microsoft said synchronization should take less than a minute, but that estimate is not a guarantee that every account or conversation type will appear.

Can you still export or recover old Skype history?
Microsoft’s updated retirement notice said deletion of Skype data began April 1, 2026, and requests to export data could be made through June 15, 2026. That request period has passed. Microsoft also said exports requested after April 1 might not include complete history. Its notice described some active users who had used Teams Free before December 1, 2025 as retaining call and chat history in Teams Free; this was a historical policy statement, not a guarantee of current access. Check Teams and contact Microsoft Support about your account’s status.
Microsoft’s former export instructions described signing in to an export page with a Microsoft account and selecting conversations, files, or both. The archive could contain Skype and SMS messages, polls, scheduled calls, swift cards, location shares, and media such as files, pictures, videos, video messages, voicemail, and call recordings. The download was a .tar file; Microsoft noted that opening it might require an additional application. These details describe the former export process, not an option still available after the stated deadline. Microsoft’s export instructions provide the process details.

What happened to Skype Numbers and paid calling?
Microsoft’s current retirement notice says all Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026 and that port-out requests are no longer available. If you relied on a Skype Number, the stated window to transfer it has passed. Microsoft also says the Skype subscription service ended May 1, 2026; subscriptions extending beyond that date were to be cancelled and converted into Skype Credit, with a refund option described for users who did not want credit. Any refund or account-specific remedy should be confirmed with Microsoft Support.

Teams Free does not support paid calling plans, according to Microsoft. The company identifies Teams Essentials paired with Microsoft Teams Phone as a possible option for small businesses, but that is a business-oriented service, not a direct consumer replacement for Skype Number or a like-for-like free calling plan. Confirm current availability and suitability with Microsoft.
