In Fortnite’s Fortnitemares 2026, guide reports place the Skeleton Key in buried chests in the graveyard at Nightmare Neighborhood. The nearby mansion contains three locked basement rooms; each room uses one key, and the loot can change from match to match. Epic Games confirms Nightmare Neighborhood as a new Fortnitemares point of interest, but has not officially documented the key or basement puzzle.
Where to find the Skeleton Key
Drop at Nightmare Neighborhood and move to its graveyard. The current walkthroughs agree that the key is obtained from buried chests rather than from a normal floor pickup.

Search the mausoleums
- Enter the graveyard and look for the stone mausoleums.
- Dig inside the mausoleums to uncover buried chests.
- Open each chest you find and collect any Skeleton Key it contains.
TechWiser’s October 2, 2026 walkthrough reports three mausoleums, with two containing key chests. BO3.GG’s October 2 walkthrough likewise reports that up to two keys can be collected. These chest locations and counts are guide-reported details, not mechanics confirmed in Epic’s event announcement.

After collecting a key, travel to the mansion near the graveyard. The guides place the secret rooms in the mansion’s basement and describe three locked doors. Opening a door consumes one Skeleton Key, so carrying two keys allows access to two rooms and carrying three would be required for all three if that many are available in your match.

Use the mansion route that works in your match
The published walkthroughs disagree about the exact interior path. TechWiser describes reaching the dining room, breaking through the floor and dropping into the basement. BO3.GG instead describes entering through the main entrance, taking the first left and following the stairs downward. Because these accounts conflict, do not treat either sequence as a guaranteed layout.
If your character displays a directional indicator while holding a key, follow that indicator toward the locked-room area. Otherwise, check the dining room floor and the stairway route, and listen for the basement doors as you move through the mansion.

What is behind each door?
There is no reliably best door. Both walkthroughs say the rewards vary between matches. Reported possibilities include ordinary supplies, weapons, chests and, in some rooms, rare chests. A specific door is not documented as having a permanently superior reward.

Fast route and practical tips
- Land close enough to the graveyard to reach the mausoleums before another squad clears them.
- Search every mausoleum rather than assuming the first chest contains a key.
- Keep a weapon and healing items while digging; the graveyard and mansion are contested event locations.
- Mark the mansion before leaving the graveyard so the northeast rotation is easier to follow.
- Do not spend a key immediately if you want to inspect the basement first; each opened door consumes one.
- If the indicator does not appear, rely on the mansion’s visible entrances and check both the dining-room floor and stair route because the published interior directions differ.
Is the Skeleton Key still available?
Epic’s October 1, 2026 announcement confirms Nightmare Neighborhood as a Fortnitemares 2026 Battle Royale point of interest, with Freddy Krueger present. That announcement does not specify the Skeleton Key, the basement, the number of doors or an end date for the mechanic.

TechWiser describes the key as Fortnitemares-exclusive and says it will leave when the event ends, but no verified expiry date is established in the cited official announcement. Availability can therefore change with an event update; check the in-game map and current patch information if the graveyard or mansion no longer behaves as described.
Why you may not find a key or room
The mausoleums are empty
Another player may have opened the buried chest first, or the chest distribution may differ between matches. Search all reported mausoleums and try another match if none remains.

The mansion route does not match a guide
The two October 2 walkthroughs give different interior routes. Use any directional indicator supplied by the key, then check both the dining-room floor and the main-entrance stairway rather than forcing one route.
A door will not open
Confirm that you are carrying a Skeleton Key and that you are interacting with a locked basement door, not a decorative door elsewhere in the mansion. Each successful opening uses one key.

Bottom line
Search the graveyard mausoleums at Nightmare Neighborhood for buried chests, take the key or keys you find, then go to the nearby mansion and locate its basement. Expect three locked rooms and one key per door, but use the in-game indicator when available because the mansion route is not consistently described. Treat the precise chest and puzzle mechanics as current third-party reporting rather than official Epic documentation.
