SK Telecom plans to build a gigawatt-scale AI Cloud in Korea with NVIDIA, with its first AI factory targeted to come online in 2027. A later company announcement broadened the ambition to as much as 15 GW of AI data-center capacity, including 5 GW that SKT says it aims to activate in stages from 2029. Both announcements describe future plans, not operating facilities.
What is SK Telecom planning to build?
On June 8, 2026, SK Telecom announced a planned gigawatt-scale AI Cloud in Korea with NVIDIA. The company says the first AI factory is planned to come online in 2027 and that the cloud is intended to support sovereign, physical, and agentic AI workloads for Korean enterprises and industries. These are SKT’s stated plans and intended uses, not evidence that the facility is already serving customers. SK Telecom’s announcement describes NVIDIA DSX as the architecture blueprint, bringing together accelerated computing, systems, software, and partner technologies.
How does the 15 GW ambition relate to the NVIDIA AI Cloud?
On July 5, 2026, SK Telecom announced a wider ambition to pursue up to 15 GW of AI data-center capacity. The company said 5 GW would be activated in stages from 2029, and framed the Ulsan project as an expansion to gigawatt scale, with SKT leading the overall project using SK Group capabilities. The announcement does not establish that the full 15 GW is financed, under construction, or operational. SK Telecom’s July announcement presents the capacity figures as targets.
| Announcement | Capacity and timing | Scope and technology | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 8, 2026: AI Cloud with NVIDIA | Gigawatt-scale AI Cloud; first AI factory planned for 2027 | Korea; NVIDIA DSX; intended for sovereign, physical, and agentic AI workloads | Company plan |
| July 5, 2026: broader AI data-center buildout | Up to 15 GW ambition; 5 GW targeted for staged activation from 2029 | Includes an Ulsan project described as expanding to gigawatt scale; SKT says it will lead with SK Group capabilities | Company targets, not confirmed operating capacity |
The figures describe related but distinct announcements: the June release names a specific AI Cloud plan and partner platform, while the July release sets a much larger capacity ambition. SK Telecom had also described 1 GW-class hyperscale data-center infrastructure in March 2026; the later 15 GW target expands that ambition rather than documenting capacity already delivered. The March strategy announcement supplies that earlier context.

What does SK Telecom mean by “sovereign AI”?
SK Telecom describes its Sovereign AI Package as combining AI data-center infrastructure, its A.X K1 foundation model, and AI services tailored to industrial and enterprise uses. That package explains how the company uses the term in its own strategy: infrastructure, a model, and services presented together as a sovereign-AI offering. SKT’s description of the package and A.X K1 is a corporate framing, not independent proof that every layer of the system is under Korean control.

The announcements establish corporate intent and target dates, but do not substantiate the execution details needed to judge whether the full program can be delivered. In particular, the releases do not establish:
Rank #2
- Space Saving: Maximum depth: 14.8". Use the wall mount network cabinet to maximize available space for retail locations, classrooms, back offices, network cabinets, and other locations where space is limited.
- Fast Heat Dissipation: The server cabinet is designed with vents to optimize airflow and avoid critical IT equipment overheating. Heat sink holes in the top, bottom, and rear panels are more conducive to heat dissipation.
- Sturdy Construction: Robust welded frame construction for durability and long service life. With 100 lbs wall-mounted load capacity and 200 lbs ground-mounted load capacity, you can place multiple devices in the server rack cabinet as needed.
- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
- How the projects will be financed.
- What power procurement and grid access will be available.
- Which permits have been obtained or the construction status across intended sites.
- Whether customers have signed commitments for the planned capacity.
- What criteria SKT will use to activate each stage of capacity.
Until those details are disclosed or independently corroborated, the 2027, 2029, and 15 GW figures should be read as company targets rather than proof of completed infrastructure or guaranteed service availability.
