SK hynix announced on September 26, 2024, that it had begun mass production of a 12-layer HBM3E memory stack with 36GB capacity, and said it planned to supply mass-produced products to customers within that year. HBM3E is specialized high-bandwidth memory designed for integration with accelerator hardware—not a new kind of RAM for a typical PC.

What is 12-layer 36GB HBM3E?

HBM stands for High Bandwidth Memory. SK hynix describes HBM as DRAM chips connected vertically to increase data-processing speed compared with traditional DRAM. HBM3E is an extended version of HBM3. In the product announced in 2024, twelve 3GB DRAM chips are stacked to provide 36GB of memory in one stack. Through-silicon vias (TSVs)—vertical electrical connections passing through the silicon—connect the chips.

The figures are SK hynix’s specifications, not independent test results. In its September 26, 2024 announcement, the company reported an operating speed of 9.6 Gbps and said the stack provides 50% more capacity than its previous eight-layer product while keeping the same thickness.

How does the design fit more memory into the stack?

Adding layers can create structural and thermal challenges. SK hynix said it made each DRAM chip 40% thinner than the chips in its previous eight-layer product, allowing twelve layers to fit within the same overall thickness. It also used Advanced MR-MUF (Mass Reflow Molded Underfill): the company describes liquid protective material placed between chips and hardened after stacking. SK hynix says this approach helps control warpage and manage heat.

SK hynix reported 10% higher heat-dissipation performance than the previous generation, attributing the improvement to Advanced MR-MUF. That percentage is the company’s comparison; the announcement does not provide an independent measurement.

What does 9.6 Gbps mean for AI workloads?

Data rate describes how quickly memory transfers data; it is not the same as the stack’s 36GB capacity. For AI accelerators, high-bandwidth memory can help move the large volumes of model data needed during computation. The practical result depends on the whole system—including the accelerator, memory configuration, workload, and software—so the 9.6 Gbps specification alone does not establish how much faster a particular AI task will run.

SK hynix illustrated the product’s potential by saying a single GPU equipped with four HBM3E products could read the 70 billion parameters of Llama 3 70B 35 times in one second. This is the company’s illustration, not an independently validated benchmark in the cited material.

Is this memory a PC upgrade?

No general-purpose retail upgrade path is established for this HBM3E stack. It is specialized memory intended to be integrated with AI accelerator hardware, rather than a standalone DIMM that a user installs in a desktop motherboard. SK hynix’s announcement concerns supplying the component to customers for hardware integration; it does not establish that the memory is sold as a standalone consumer product.

What later hardware has SK hynix shown it with?

In an October 31, 2025 account of its OCP Global Summit presentation, SK hynix said it displayed 36GB HBM3E applied to NVIDIA’s next-generation GB300 Grace Blackwell GPU. That is a company-reported display and application example. It does not establish that every GB300 configuration uses this exact memory stack, that the component is compatible with other platforms, or that consumers can upgrade to it.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

The 2024 announcement establishes a manufacturer-reported 36GB, 12-layer HBM3E product and its intended role in AI hardware. Its capacity, data-rate, thickness, thermal, and workload figures should be read as SK hynix claims, not as independently validated comparative results. The cited announcements also do not provide a like-for-like comparison with competing vendors’ HBM3E products, so they cannot establish a cross-vendor performance ranking.
