A single point of failure (SPOF) is one component, service, location, or decision point whose failure can stop a larger system from delivering a capability it needs to provide. The practical test is: What is the one thing that, if it fails, stops the system from doing its job?
What makes something a single point of failure?
It is the consequence of failure—not how likely a component is to break—that defines a SPOF. If the system cannot provide a required service when that element is unavailable, the system depends on it in a critical way. A component can be reliable and still be a SPOF; an unreliable component is not necessarily one if the system can continue working without it.
The required capability matters. A system may keep running after a failure but lose an essential function, such as accepting transactions, checking product quality, or providing access to hosted applications. In that case, the failed element may still be a SPOF for that function.

Shared services and providers
A centralized internet service provider can be a dependency shared by many applications. If it crashes or behaves maliciously, users may lose access or receive erroneous or inconsistent results. NIST describes consensus algorithms and state-machine replication as approaches that can let mutually distrusting parties emulate a centralized service fault-tolerantly; they are technical options, not universal fixes. NIST IR 8460 (initial public draft, April 2023)

Manufacturing equipment
In a 2021 NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership case study, every bag of chips at a facility had to pass through one obsolete barcode scanner. It tracked production throughput and rejected products that did not meet quality requirements. The scanner and its programmable logic controller had no replacement parts available, putting daily production at risk. This example shows how one device can be both a process bottleneck and a maintainability problem; the case study describes the challenge, not its eventual resolution. NIST MEP, “FastLane – Bar Code Scanner Upgrade”
Facilities and locations
A data center can be a SPOF if a hazard or facility failure would disable the services that depend on it. NIST’s critical-facilities report discusses strengthening a facility against hazards and considering a geographically separate redundant facility. These choices can be costly and need to be included in resilience planning. NIST GCR 23-037, Resilience for Critical Facilities (January 2023)

People and authority
A person or approval step can be a SPOF when one individual holds authority that no one else can exercise. In a 2020 NIST article, computer scientist Apostol Vassilev explained that an unavailable keyholder can create a bottleneck. Threshold cryptography is one approach in which a minimum number of keyholders must cooperate, rather than relying on a single individual. NIST, “NIST Kick-Starts ‘Threshold Cryptography’ Development Effort” (July 2020)
How do you tell whether a dependency is a SPOF?
- Name the capability. Be specific about what the system must do, such as serve an application, maintain production, or authorize a critical action.
- Trace the dependencies. Identify the components, services, locations, network paths, and decision-makers required for that capability.
- Consider each dependency unavailable. Ask whether the system can still deliver the required capability, and what functions or users would be affected.
- Look for shared dependencies. Two apparent alternatives may rely on the same provider, power source, facility, configuration, or person. A shared dependency can make both fail together.
- Check the recovery path. Determine whether an alternate path can take over, preserve the needed capability, and recover without causing further losses.
This is a consequence-based assessment, not a count of parts. A system can contain many components yet still depend critically on one shared service, while a component that fails often may not be a SPOF if another path keeps the required service available.

Does redundancy eliminate a single point of failure?
Redundancy adds another way to maintain a capability, but a duplicate does not automatically make a system resilient. The backup needs to be independent enough to survive the failure under consideration, provide the capability that matters, and remain ready to work. NIST distinguishes redundancy from diversity: redundancy supplies another element or path, while diversity helps reduce the risk that a common-mode failure disables similar elements together. NIST SP 800-160 Rev. 1, Engineering Trustworthy Secure Systems (November 2022)
| What to evaluate | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Independence | Does the backup avoid the same component, provider, location, power supply, network path, or authority dependency? |
| Common-mode exposure | Could one event or shared configuration disable both the primary and backup? |
| Capability retained | Will the alternate path preserve the required service, or only part of it? |
| Recovery behavior | Can the system isolate the failure and recover without triggering further losses? |
| Cost and upkeep | Are the added resources practical, and will their configurations and connections stay correct as the system changes? |
Redundancy also requires ongoing attention. NIST warns that it can degrade as configurations and connectivity change; resources tied to one hardware component or data center can remain a SPOF and a high-value target if the broader dependencies are overlooked. NIST SP 800-160 Vol. 2 Rev. 1, Developing Cyber-Resilient Systems (December 2021)

Why not make everything redundant?
Resilience decisions involve feasibility, practicality, cost, and uncertainty. A second component or facility may be expensive to build and operate, and it can still share the failure modes of the primary. The useful goal is not duplication for its own sake; it is keeping the capabilities that matter available through the failures the system is expected to withstand. NIST’s systems-engineering guidance treats these as design tradeoffs rather than a guarantee that every failure can be prevented.
