A single iron-based molecular complex showed memory-like behavior near room temperature: its spin state depended on its thermal history. The result, reported as a research milestone in 2022, is not a working storage chip. The study demonstrated a molecular spin-crossover effect, not a device that can store files.
What the study demonstrated
Andrea Moneo-Corcuera and colleagues studied an iron-triazole polyanionic complex that can switch between electronic spin states. Because spin state affects magnetic behavior, this transition can be detected as the material changes state.
The team observed thermal hysteresis: the state at a given temperature depended on whether the sample had been heated or cooled to reach it. That history dependence is the memory-like feature. The paper’s title describes the result as “Molecular Memory Near Room Temperature,” a more precise formulation than saying the material is a room-temperature computer memory.

How a molecule can show memory
Spin crossover and thermal history
In spin crossover, a metal complex changes electronic spin state. In this study, the transition’s relaxation was slow enough that the system did not immediately settle into the state favored by the current temperature. As a result, the measured state depended on the sample’s path through the temperature cycle.
Why the effect persisted after dilution
Thermal memory in spin-crossover materials has generally been associated with cooperative behavior across bulk materials. The researchers reported that hysteresis persisted after dilution in solid mixtures and in liquid solution. Those experiments support a molecular-level contribution rather than an effect that requires an undiluted bulk sample.

The proposed energy barrier
The authors used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explain the slow relaxation through an energy barrier at the molecular level. This is the study’s interpretation of the observations, not a universal design rule established for all molecular memories.
How the researchers observed the transition
The paper combines magnetic and spectroscopic evidence with dilution experiments and DFT calculations. Coverage of the study also describes a colour change between states, providing a visible indication of the transition. Together, these are measurements of molecular material behavior; they are not tests of data readout or storage in an integrated electronic device.

Why it is not a usable computer memory yet
The demonstrated switching was thermally controlled. Chemistry World’s report identifies gradual temperature transitions as a requirement for recording and describes fast writing as a challenge. Materials researcher José Ramón Galán-Mascarós characterized it as “a single-molecule memory that works at room temperature,” while University of Florence researcher Roberta Sessoli noted of the temperature switch, “It’s not very handy.” These comments describe the research concept and its thermal-switching limitation, not a tested product.
Activating the switch with light, pressure, or electricity was discussed as future work in that reporting; the study did not demonstrate those methods. Nor did it show file storage, a practical retention-and-readout system, or an advantage over conventional computer memory. Data storage remains a possible application, not a capability established by this experiment.
