A 30-year-old man was charged in Singapore on 29 September 2026 over an AI-generated crocodile image that prompted precautionary searches and a suspension of water activities at Pandan Reservoir. The “10 years” in the headline refers to the combined maximum prison terms for two charges—not a sentence imposed or a forecast of what the accused will receive.
What happened at Pandan Reservoir
Singapore Police said the man created an AI-generated image depicting a crocodile at Pandan Reservoir and sent it to a colleague. After PUB was notified on 20 August 2026, members of the public were advised to exercise caution, water activities were suspended, and PUB and the National Parks Board conducted search and capture operations. PUB later found the photograph fake and referred the matter to police on 21 August. Singapore Police Force and CNA’s report on PUB’s response describe these steps.
CNA identified the accused as Ye Lin, a Myanmar national. He was charged on 29 September with communicating a false message and obstructing the course of justice. CNA reported that, through an interpreter, he told the court he intended to plead guilty and would not engage a lawyer. That statement is not a court finding: as of 3 October 2026, the sources do not establish his eventual plea, the court’s findings, or any sentence. His next reported court date was 10 November 2026. Why reports say he faces up to 10 years
Police cited two separate offences and their maximum penalties. The ten-year figure adds the stated prison maximums; it does not mean a ten-year sentence has been imposed or that the accused is likely to receive one. The available reports do not say whether prison terms would run consecutively.

What the obstruction charge alleges
CNA reported that the obstruction charge concerns an allegation that Ye Lin deleted the AI-generated images and Gemini app log history from his phone on 21 August. Police described the deletion of the image and related application as an attempt to conceal his actions. Why PUB suspended activities—and what image checks showed
PUB’s response was precautionary. After being alerted, it suspended water activities and carried out searches. On 21 August, PUB said the supplied photo was fake, lodged a police report and stopped the searches; water activities were to resume from 22 August. CNA’s report of PUB’s announcement
On 1 October, CNA reported that PUB had tried several AI-detection tools, but their results were inconclusive. PUB said it acted quickly and took necessary precautionary measures in the interest of public safety. The report does not identify the tools or explain the technical method by which the image was ultimately established as AI-generated. What Singapore authorities say about fabricated images
In a written parliamentary reply dated 9 September 2026, Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said police may conduct forensic examinations when investigating edited photos submitted to mislead authorities. The reply said police could not provide case-specific details while investigations were ongoing. It also said potential criminal liability depends on the facts and circumstances, and advised people to verify information through credible official sources. The practical distinction is between checking an image and presenting it as genuine: the Ministry said people who knowingly circulate false information with intent to cause alarm, or provide false information or fabricated evidence to authorities, may face criminal liability depending on the circumstances.
