A fluorescent probe reported in 2015 offered a research concept for detecting heparin and its contaminant oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS). It pairs a heparin-recognizing peptide with a fluorogen signal component. The published work describes a possible basis for testing, not a validated clinical assay or an established production-release method.
How the fluorescent probe is designed to work
The probe combines two functions: a peptide intended to recognize heparin and a fluorogen that supplies the optical signal. The 2015 report says the probe molecules aggregate in heparin’s presence and produce fluorescence, creating a “turn on” signal that could be measured.
The underlying paper, by Yubin Ding, Leilei Shi, and Hui Wei, was published in Chemical Science, volume 6, pages 6361–6366, under the title “A ‘turn on’ fluorescent probe for heparin and its oversulfated chondroitin sulfate contaminant.” Chemistry World’s 7 August 2015 report described it as a fluorescent sensor that could potentially be developed into a test for blood-thinner dosage and adulteration. Why heparin quality control needs more than a potency check
Heparin is a naturally sourced anticoagulant with substantial structural heterogeneity. Measuring anticoagulant potency alone does not establish that a sample is the expected substance or rule out a contaminant. That distinction became urgent during the 2007–2008 OSCS contamination crisis: as the 2019 review “Tools for the Quality Control of Pharmaceutical Heparin” explains, potency testing can fail as a safeguard if it assumes the sample is heparin and that any contaminant will simply reduce measured potency.
The review’s authors report more than 100 deaths in North America alone in connection with the crisis. This is the review’s historical figure, not a result of the 2015 fluorescent-probe study.

Where the probe fits among quality-control methods
The 2019 review says the crisis led to identity-focused techniques, including 300 MHz proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis, being added to the United States Pharmacopeia heparin monograph and other pharmacopeias. These methods address identity and contamination concerns alongside potency testing.
The fluorescent probe is best understood as a possible research approach within that broader analytical landscape—not as a replacement for compendial controls. A meaningful comparison with another method would need to establish what each detects, its analytical principle, sample preparation and matrix, sensitivity and selectivity, validation for the intended use, and status in applicable pharmacopeial controls. The cited material does not provide enough validated performance data to make that comparison for the probe.

What the 2015 report does not establish
- That the probe is a currently available product, kit, or service.
- That it has been validated for clinical decisions, routine quality control, or production release.
- That its sensitivity, selectivity, or performance in relevant sample matrices has been established for those uses.
- That it replaces potency testing, identity testing, or applicable pharmacopeial requirements.
