Silver Pines is reviewing exceptionally well in the critic scores reported ahead of its October 8, 2026 launch, making it an early contender for one of the year’s standout games. That is a promising release-week signal, not a settled year-end ranking: scores vary, and Steam had no user reviews in the listing captured on October 7.

What is Silver Pines?

Silver Pines is a single-player survival-horror metroidvania from developer Wych Elm and publisher Team17. You play private investigator Red Walker, hired to find Eddie Velvet, a missing musician. The search takes Walker through a half-abandoned American town and into a dark mystery. The Steam store description introduces the job and its forgotten setting.

Its design combines exploration and puzzles with scarce resources, monsters, and routes that open as you find tools and weapons. That mix makes it part detective story, part horror adventure, and part map-navigation challenge—not a straightforward action game.

How well is Silver Pines reviewing?

Pure Xbox’s October 2026 roundup reports an OpenCritic rating of 87 with 93% recommended, plus a PS5 Metacritic score of 91 at publication. Those are time-sensitive figures reported by Pure Xbox, not independently verified live aggregator snapshots. The roundup’s listed individual critic scores range from 7/10 to 10/10.

Outlet Score reported by Pure Xbox
CGMagazine 10/10
Radio Times 10/10
DualShockers 9.5/10
GamesRadar+ 9/10
Gamer Social Club 9/10
PlayStation Universe 8.5/10
The Guardian 8/10
Checkpoint Gaming 7/10

All outlet scores in the table are as listed in Pure Xbox’s October 2026 roundup. Its spread shows a broadly enthusiastic reception while also making clear that reviewers do not agree on every part of the game.

What reviewers praise—and what may frustrate players

Positive reviews focus on atmosphere, art direction, mystery, and the unusual fit between detective fiction and metroidvania exploration. The Guardian’s Keith Stuart describes it as “a game to sit back and wallow in,” praising its film-noir style and carefully constructed locations in his review.

  • Puzzles can be obtuse. The Guardian notes that some may be difficult to work through.
  • Combat can feel tense or take adjustment. DualShockers says it takes time to get used to; The Guardian also characterizes it as tense.
  • The horror’s intensity is not universal. PlayStation Universe says the horror may not weigh heavily, while Checkpoint Gaming says the genre blend did not fully work for that reviewer.
  • Investigation rewards attention. DualShockers warns that distracted players may be punished during investigation.

These are individual critics’ reported impressions, not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience. The Guardian says lowering the difficulty is an option for players more interested in the story than a demanding challenge.

Is Silver Pines worth playing?

The critic response makes Silver Pines worth a closer look if you enjoy slow-burn atmosphere, detective mysteries, exploration, and unlocking new routes through a connected map. It may be a less natural fit if you want constant action, simple puzzle clues, or horror that remains intense throughout. The central trade-off is whether the noir mystery and exploration appeal enough to make tense encounters and occasional puzzle friction welcome parts of the experience.

Do not read the reported scores as proof of player consensus. Steam showed “No user reviews” in the captured listing, so critic reception was available before a meaningful Steam player response had appeared.
