Silver Pines is a survival-horror Metroidvania about a private investigator searching an abandoned town for a missing musician. Its strongest case is the combination of moody presentation, clue-led exploration and limited supplies; the central caveat is that reviewers describe boss fights and some combat as less assured than the atmosphere surrounding them. The game is listed to launch October 8, 2026, so this is a pre-release review based on published reviews and previews—not a verdict on launch performance or player response.
What is Silver Pines about?
Private investigator Red Walker arrives in the half-abandoned town of Silver Pines to find Eddie Velvet, a missing musician. The search turns into an investigation of the town’s dark past, and the case draws Walker into increasingly strange, nightmarish events. The official description frames the game as a love letter to classic survival horror. The official Silver Pines site introduces the premise, while the Steam listing describes its horror and exploration features.
The town is the main exploration space rather than a backdrop for a sequence of unrelated levels. Reviews describe abandoned shops, apartment buildings and sewer networks connected by clues, puzzles and locked routes. The mystery gives those locations a reason to matter: finding a lead can point you toward a new area, while discovering a tool can make an earlier barrier passable.

Is Silver Pines a Metroidvania or a survival-horror game?
It is both, with the two genres describing different parts of the experience. Survival horror shapes how you handle danger: supplies are limited, inventory space matters, and combat can cost ammunition or a breakable weapon. Metroidvania structure shapes where you can go: tools and discoveries open routes through a dense map, encouraging you to revisit places you could not fully explore before.

That mix makes backtracking purposeful when a new item unlocks a path or helps solve an earlier obstacle. It also asks for patience. Players who prefer a direct, linear horror story may find the route-finding and revisiting less appealing; players who enjoy connecting clues to a map should find more to engage with. GamesRadar+’s review describes the dense map and rewarding returns to earlier locations, and The Guardian’s review emphasizes clue- and puzzle-led progression through locked rooms.
How do exploration and inventory work?
Tools have practical trade-offs, rather than serving only as keys. GamesRadar+ says the crowbar can pull down wooden panels and double as a melee weapon, but takes more inventory space than a box cutter. Its review also describes combining items, upgrading weapons to reduce their inventory footprint, using storage boxes, and recording points of interest with a camera feature. Those details suggest an exploration loop in which deciding what to carry is part of solving the next problem.

Scarcity is also part of the combat rhythm. The Guardian notes that knives break and pistols need careful reloading because ammunition is limited. That makes the choice to fight consequential: even if an enemy is in your way, using a scarce resource may leave you less prepared for what follows. Store descriptions list scavenging, limited inventory, puzzles, weapons and tools among the game’s features. Steam’s feature listing provides the official overview.
What do reviews say about the atmosphere and combat?
GamesRadar+ praises the atmosphere, painterly visuals, music, pacing and investigative mystery. The Guardian’s assessment similarly highlights the game’s style, pacing and mythology, while noting that it uses familiar adventure conventions. Together, those observations point to a game whose identity rests less on inventing a new horror formula than on making its mystery and world compelling enough to sustain exploration.
Rank #3
The reservations are worth weighing against that strength. GamesRadar+ identifies boss fights as a potential weak point. The Guardian describes survival-horror combat and fragile weapons, while PC Gamer’s preview of the demo’s first hour reports that combat initially felt awkward. That preview covers only its opening hour, not the full game, so it should not be treated as a complete assessment. The evidence supports a cautious expectation: exploration and mood are the clearest draws, while combat may not be the main reason to play.
Is Silver Pines like Silent Hill or Resident Evil?
The comparisons work as shorthand for its blend of psychological unease and survival-horror resource pressure, not as a claim that it belongs to either series. The useful similarities are atmospheric horror, a mystery rooted in a strange place, limited supplies and puzzles. Its gated exploration and return visits also make it distinct from a purely linear horror campaign. Whether the blend lands for you depends on how much you enjoy map-based discovery alongside the tension of managing weapons and inventory.

Should you play Silver Pines?
Silver Pines looks most promising for players who want a horror mystery to explore rather than simply watch unfold. Its combination of a missing-person investigation, a richly connected town, clue-based puzzles and resource pressure gives the premise a clear gameplay shape. Reviewers’ praise for mood, pacing and visual style makes that structure more enticing, while the reported boss-fight and combat concerns are reasons to temper expectations if action is your main priority.
This is a pre-release judgment. The game is listed for October 8, 2026, and the available evidence does not establish how the finished launch build performs or how players will respond.
