Silicon Motion’s MonTitan 128TB SSD is a reference design kit (RDK), not a retail drive. Announced for sampling to select partners and customers on March 12, 2025, it is a QLC-based enterprise SSD design built to help manufacturers develop storage for data centers and AI workloads. Silicon Motion reported more than 14 GB/s sequential-read throughput and more than 3.3 million random-read IOPS for the 128TB design; those are vendor figures, not independent test results.
What the MonTitan 128TB RDK is
An RDK is a development platform that gives SSD makers and other partners a starting point for building products. Silicon Motion described MonTitan as a user-programmable PCIe Gen5 platform, with reference designs for enterprise drive formats. Its March 2025 announcement said the 128TB QLC design was available for sampling to select partners and customers—not that a finished drive was on general sale.
The capacity figure describes the announced design’s maximum supported capacity. Silicon Motion’s separate product brief lists configurations up to 64TB, so that brief should not be read as documentation for a shipping 128TB product. The company’s current MonTitan product-page description continues to state platform support for capacities up to 128TB.

The 128TB RDK uses Silicon Motion’s dual-ported SM8366 enterprise controller. The platform supports PCIe Gen5 x4, NVMe 2.0, and OCP 2.5 data-center specifications. Silicon Motion’s product materials specify 16 NAND channels operating at up to 2400 MT/s for the SM8366.

| Capability | What Silicon Motion states |
|---|---|
| Capacity and NAND | Up to 128TB using QLC NAND for the design announced in March 2025. |
| Sequential read | More than 14 GB/s for the 128TB design, according to the March 2025 announcement. |
| Random read | More than 3.3 million IOPS for the 128TB design, according to the March 2025 announcement. The current MonTitan product page lists up to 3.5 million 4K random-read IOPS for the platform. |
| Form factors | The product brief lists E1.S, E3.x, and U.2/U.3 designs; the product page describes reference designs for EDSFF and U.2/U.3. |
| Security | The product page lists AES-256 and TCG Opal self-encrypting-drive support, secure boot, attestation, key wrapping, and a hardware root of trust. |
| Power | The 2024 product brief states average SSD power below 25W and idle power below 5W for its RDK designs; it does not establish those figures specifically for a 128TB configuration. |
These are Silicon Motion’s published specifications, not independent measurements. The separate product brief’s listed configurations include 8TB TLC, 16TB QLC, and 16–64TB QLC variants; its performance table gives 14,200 MB/s sequential read and up to 3,500 KIOPS random read for the listed variants. Those figures refer to the configurations in that brief, not proof of performance from a commercial 128TB drive.
How FDP and PerformaShape relate to AI storage
The MonTitan platform supports NVMe 2.0 Flexible Data Placement (FDP), which lets a storage system provide placement guidance so data can be written with workload behavior in mind. Silicon Motion pairs FDP with PerformaShape, its multi-stage shaping algorithm, configured for user-defined quality-of-service (QoS) sets. The stated aim is to make performance behavior more predictable across different workloads and tenants—not to guarantee a particular latency or application-level result.
Rank #2
In its 2025 announcement, Silicon Motion connected the technologies to multi-tenant AI pipeline stages: ingest, preparation, training, and inference. In August 2026, the company extended its positioning to Agentic AI infrastructure, describing enterprise SSDs as a persistent-memory layer for KV-cache offload and autonomous agents. That is the company’s use-case framing; the announcement does not report independent workload testing or quantify an AI application’s performance improvement.

The current product-page description also lists a Zoned Namespace (ZNS) firmware stack, along with 1,024 queue pairs and 128 namespaces. These are platform capabilities; their presence alone does not establish endurance, write amplification, or workload performance for a particular SSD product. Silicon Motion’s 2026 announcement says PerformaShape is implemented on both the SM8366 PCIe 5.0 and SM8466 PCIe 6.0 enterprise-controller platforms, positioning the next-generation RDK for SSD makers developing AI-server and data-center products.

Is it available to buy?
No retail availability is established by the announcements described here. The March 2025 statement was that the 128TB RDK was available for sampling to select partners and customers. It did not announce a consumer product, public retail price, or general sales date. Companies seeking to build enterprise SSDs would need to approach Silicon Motion about partner access; consumers should not treat the RDK as a drive they can order.
The supplied product materials also do not establish a commercial 128TB product’s endurance rating, write amplification, or shipping status. Those product-specific details matter for evaluating a finished enterprise SSD and cannot be inferred from the RDK’s capacity or interface specifications.
