Silicon Labs’ July 29, 2019 announcement added hybrid software-defined-radio (SDR) models, the Si479x7, to its Si479xx automotive tuner family and brought SDR-oriented digital signal-processing features to existing Si4790x/1x/2x/5x/6x devices. The update was designed to help automakers and Tier 1 suppliers reuse radio hardware and software across markets and broadcast standards. Silicon Labs described the Si479x7 as its first automotive tuner supporting Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM).
What changed in the Si479xx family?
The Si479x7 extends Silicon Labs’ Global Eagle and Dual Eagle AM/FM and digital-radio tuner families with a hybrid SDR approach. It is not described as a fully general-purpose software radio: the update adds specific DSP capabilities intended to help a common tuner platform work with different digital-radio standards.
Silicon Labs also said the new devices maintain pin and package compatibility between single- and dual-tuner options. Its broader Si479xx platform was designed around a shared API so infotainment developers could reuse software across product lines. An earlier family announcement described a low-IF digital architecture with integrated ADC and DAC audio paths; those are platform-context features, not new capabilities attributed specifically to the Si479x7 announcement. Silicon Labs’ earlier Si479xx announcement.
Which SDR features were added?
The 2019 announcement identifies four SDR-friendly DSP functions. Silicon Labs presented them as tools for a reusable hardware and software design that can support digital-radio standards around the world.

- Maximal ratio combining (MRC): a signal-combining function included in the SDR-oriented DSP update.
- Digital automatic gain control (AGC): adjusts signal gain digitally.
- Digital Radio Fast Detect: a function for quickly detecting digital-radio signals.
- Dynamic zero-IF (ZIF) I/Q: dynamic in-phase and quadrature signal handling using a zero-intermediate-frequency architecture.
The announcement does not specify performance figures or implementation details for these functions, so they should be understood as listed capabilities rather than a quantified performance comparison.
Does the Si479x7 support DRM?
Yes. Silicon Labs called the Si479x7 its first automotive tuner with DRM support. The announcement lists DRM30, which operates up to 30 MHz, and DRM+, which operates up to 300 MHz. It described DRM30 as prevalent in India and noted trials in Russia and South Africa. Those statements reflect the market context in Silicon Labs’ 2019 announcement, not a current deployment survey.

Which radio standards and bands are covered?
Silicon Labs lists the Si479xx portfolio as covering the following analog bands and digital-radio standards:
Rank #3
- Does NOT include antenna
- SXV300V1 by itself with no other accesories
- Compatible with SiriusXM ready receivers only
- AM and FM
- Long Wave (LW) and Short Wave (SW)
- Weather Band
- HD Radio
- DAB Band III
- DRM, including DRM30 and DRM+
The 2019 release characterized HD Radio and DAB as predominant in the United States and Europe, respectively. That is the company’s market framing at announcement time; it should not be taken as a definitive account of present-day regional adoption.
Single or dual tuner: package and board-area figures
Silicon Labs announced two QFN package options. Its board-area figures are stated as less-than values, not exact package footprints.

Why Silicon Labs pursued a common tuner platform
Automotive radios are sold across regions with different broadcast formats. Silicon Labs’ stated goal was to let OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers use a more reusable hardware and software platform for worldwide digital-radio standards, reducing design and sourcing complexity. Juan Revilla, then General Manager of Broadcast Products at Silicon Labs, said the company’s advanced digital-radio tuners enabled radio manufacturers to develop “a single platform to demodulate and decode worldwide digital radio standards.” Silicon Labs’ July 29, 2019 announcement.
