No. Unlinking a Roku TV from your Roku account does not delete the account and does not cancel subscriptions billed through Roku. It only removes that TV from the account. A factory reset also unlinks the TV, but it does not cancel anything either. Subscriptions have to be canceled with whoever bills them, and closing the Roku account is a separate step with its own consequences.

“Sign out” is a loose term. Roku’s help articles describe a set of different actions: unlinking a device, using unlinked mode, factory resetting, canceling a subscription, and closing the account. Each one removes a different thing, so the sections below separate them.

What each action removes

Action Deletes the Roku account? Cancels Roku-billed subscriptions? Roku streaming apps afterward What you must do next
Unlink the TV from your Roku account No No Device no longer linked to the account Nothing else is required unless you also want to cancel billing
Use unlinked mode (on supported TVs) No No Roku streaming services and Streaming Store apps unavailable Live TV and external inputs keep working
Factory reset the TV No No Apps and account information removed from the TV Complete setup, reinstall apps, sign in to services again
Cancel or turn off auto-renew on a subscription No Stops future renewal Depends on the subscription Confirm with the party that bills the subscription
Close the Roku account Yes, closes it Subscriptions must be canceled first Account cannot be reactivated Cancel subscriptions before closing

Unlinking a Roku TV from your account

Unlinking is the step most people mean when they ask about signing out. Roku’s support article on removing a streaming device from a Roku account (Roku Support Canada) describes the process as a removal of one device from your account, and states:

“Unlinking a device does not close your Roku account or cancel any Roku billed subscriptions you may have. It only removes that device from your account.”

To unlink a TV in the Roku account website, follow these steps. Menu labels can change, so if a label differs, look for the equivalent option.

  1. Sign in to your Roku account on the Roku website.
  2. Find the TV under My linked devices.
  3. Choose Unlink next to the TV.
  4. Confirm the action.

After unlinking, channels and purchases may still be available on another compatible device linked to the same account. The account itself stays open, so you can keep using it on other devices.

Unlinked mode on Roku TVs

Some Roku TVs offer an unlinked mode, which is a way to use the TV without its Roku streaming features. Availability depends on the TV model and system, so not every Roku TV will show this option. Roku’s unlinked-mode article (Roku Support) states:

“In unlinked mode, you will still be able to watch live TV channels with a cable box or antenna, and connect Blu-ray or DVD players, gaming consoles or other devices to one of the HDMI inputs. However, you will not be able to use or access Roku’s streaming services, including the apps from our Streaming Store.”

Unlinked mode changes what the TV can stream. It does not change your account or billing, and it does not close anything.

Factory resetting a Roku TV

A factory reset is the right step when you are giving away or selling the TV, or when the TV needs a clean start. Roku’s factory reset article for Roku TVs (Roku Support UK) says a reset erases most data stored on the device, unlinks it from the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and returns the TV to initial setup.

After the reset, you will need to complete setup again, reinstall the apps you want, and sign in to each streaming service. The reset does not cancel any subscription, so if you are selling the TV, cancel any Roku-billed subscriptions separately.

Subscriptions: the account link, the app, and the billing are separate

Three things can look like one thing on a TV, but they are controlled separately:

  • the link between the TV and your Roku account
  • the app installed on the TV
  • the subscription and the company that bills it

Unlinking a TV or deleting an app does not cancel the subscription behind it. Before canceling, identify who bills it.

Subscriptions billed through Roku

Roku’s guidance on managing or canceling subscriptions (Roku Support) says subscriptions signed up for through Roku can be managed on Roku’s subscriptions page or, where available, through the device’s app options. For these subscriptions, turning off auto-renew stops future renewal. Access generally continues until the current billing period ends.

Subscriptions bought directly from a streaming service

A subscription you signed up for directly with a streaming service generally has to be managed through that service. Canceling in Roku will not cancel it.

Provider exceptions

Roku lists some providers that users should contact directly even when Roku processes billing. The named examples are Disney+, Hulu, and Sling TV. If one of these is on your account, contact the provider to cancel it.

Closing the Roku account

Closing your Roku account is a separate action from unlinking. Roku’s account-closure article (Roku Support) says subscriptions must be canceled before the account is deactivated. Once closed, the account cannot be reactivated, and subscriptions and purchases are no longer available. Close the account only if you are sure you will no longer use any Roku-linked service or purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lost or stolen TV

If your Roku TV is lost or stolen, Roku’s guidance (Roku Support) says unlinking the device can prevent unauthorized purchases through your Roku account. It does not stop active subscriptions, so cancel those separately. Also remove the device from any relevant streaming-provider accounts where that applies.

Which action fits your goal

  • You want to stop using the TV but keep your Roku account: unlink the TV. The account stays open.
  • You want to give away or sell the TV: factory reset it first, then unlink it if it is still linked, and cancel any subscriptions you no longer want.
  • You want to stop subscription charges: cancel or turn off auto-renew with the company that bills the subscription. Unlinking and deleting the app are not enough.
  • You want to close the Roku account: cancel subscriptions first, then close the account, knowing it cannot be reactivated.

Model-specific menus and unlinked-mode availability differ between Roku TV systems, so check the instructions for your TV’s exact model before relying on a specific button path.
