The Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary is an APS-C lens, not a full-frame one. Sigma announced it on October 8, 2026 for Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF mounts, with launch scheduled for October 22, 2026. Its constant F2.8 aperture and Sigma’s stated framing of roughly 75-180mm full-frame equivalent make it worth comparing with full-frame telephoto zooms, especially if you want a lighter APS-C kit. It does not give you full-frame coverage, and the “legend” label is a reader expression rather than a verdict that early evidence can support yet.

What Sigma has announced

The table below separates Sigma’s own announcement from figures that DPReview and TechRadar reported. Where a value appears in only one source, the other cell says so.

Sigma’s figures are manufacturer specifications. The equivalence numbers in particular should always be quoted with the mount they apply to.

APS-C, not full frame: what the equivalence means

A 50-120mm lens on an APS-C body produces the same angle of view as a longer lens on a full-frame body, because the smaller sensor crops the image. Sigma’s roughly 75-180mm figure reflects the crop factor used for its Sony E and Fujifilm X versions. DPReview’s 80-192mm figure for Canon RF reflects Canon’s larger APS-C crop factor. Both numbers describe the same glass on different sensors, so the difference is not a discrepancy in the optics.

The practical consequence is that the lens gives you a comparable field of view to a full-frame telephoto zoom in that range. It does not give you the same sensor, depth-of-field behaviour at a given equivalent focal length, or the same low-light performance. Those depend on the camera, not the lens alone.

Sigma announced the lens for these mounts:

  • Sony E (APS-C mirrorless bodies)
  • Fujifilm X
  • Canon RF (APS-C bodies)

No Nikon Z version or other unannounced mount has been confirmed.

Stabilization, weather protection and build

Stabilization

The OS2 rating falls as you move toward the long end of the zoom. Sigma’s rating is a manufacturer figure measured under CIPA guidelines on an APS-C mirrorless camera, so it is not a guarantee of sharpness at a given shutter speed. Actual results depend on the body, technique and subject movement.

Weather protection

Sigma describes a dust- and splash-resistant structure and a water- and oil-repellent front coating. The company also states that the lens is not waterproof and warns against exposing it to large amounts of water. Treat it as a weather-resistant lens for ordinary field use, not as a rain-proof or underwater-capable one.

Physical design and accessories

Sigma’s Japanese announcement lists these supplied items: lens hood LH585-01, front cap LCF-55 IV, rear cap LCR III and a pouch. Package contents can differ by region, so check the retailer listing before assuming a hood or pouch is included.

Autofocus, video design and the APS-C zoom trio

Sigma specifies an HLA linear motor for autofocus and says the optical design minimises focus breathing, which matters for video shooters. These are announced features. No independent test in the sources reviewed measured autofocus speed or focus-breathing behaviour.

Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 Art DC HSM Lens for Canon
  • Covering three very popular short tele focal lengths when crop factor is considered 85mm, 105mm, and 135mm this lens equates to a 75-150mm constant F1.8 aperture zoom.
  • As an Art lens, the sharpness, even wide open, will rival primes while offering .
  • expected to be widely popular with both still photographers and videographers

Sigma also positions this lens as the third member of an APS-C F2.8 zoom set, alongside the 10-18mm F2.8 and 18-50mm F2.8. Sigma states that all three together weigh under 1kg. That combined figure is the company’s own claim, and it covers the set rather than this lens alone.

Price and availability

Sigma’s announcement gives an October 22, 2026 launch date but no regional price or stock information. The $799 and £699 figures come from DPReview and TechRadar reporting, not from Sigma. Confirm current pricing with Sigma or an authorised dealer in your region before relying on any figure. Prices and stock may differ by market and can change after launch.

Comparing it with a full-frame telephoto zoom

A fair comparison depends on the system you carry rather than the focal length alone. Check these points for both the Sigma and any full-frame lens you are considering:

  1. Camera mount and sensor format. The Sigma works on APS-C bodies in the three announced mounts only. A full-frame lens needs a full-frame body to deliver its full coverage.
  2. Equivalent angle of view. Compare the mount-specific equivalent range, not the nominal 50-120mm or 70-200mm labels.
  3. Maximum aperture and depth of field. Both lenses can be F2.8, but the same F-number produces different depth of field on different sensor sizes.
  4. Size and weight. Use the published figure for the exact mount you plan to buy. For the Sigma, that is the Sony E specification.
  5. Stabilization and autofocus. Compare manufacturer ratings with the same methodology, and check whether your body provides in-body stabilization in addition to the lens.
  6. Price and regional availability. Use local prices, not the reported US or UK figures, when budgeting.
  7. Tested image quality. Rely on tested results for the intended work, such as sports, wildlife or video, rather than announcement claims.

On weight, the Sigma’s 390g Sony E figure is only meaningful against the published weight of the specific full-frame lens you are considering. Compare published figures for the same mount and check them against your own bag.

What early impressions do and do not establish

DPReview’s first look includes early handling and image impressions, and the publication explicitly describes its testing as limited. Richard Butler writes: “It’s hard for me to be completely dispassionate about a lens that I’ve been hoping someone would make, for years, but I’m genuinely stunned by how small and easy-to-carry Sigma has managed to make the 50-120mm F2.8 OS.” That is a personal early impression, not a controlled measurement.

TechRadar’s article uses the phrase “an ‘instant buy'” in its headline, but its author states that they had not personally tested the lens. The “APS-C legend in the making” phrase is reader language that TechRadar reported from a Reddit discussion. It reflects enthusiasm in one community, not a survey or a consensus among reviewers.

Who should consider it

The Sigma fits photographers who already use, or plan to use, an APS-C body from one of the three announced mounts, and who want a constant F2.8 telephoto zoom in a compact size. It is less relevant if you need full-frame sensor performance or depth-of-field characteristics, or if you need a lens for an unannounced mount. Verify the launch, price and performance details on the day you buy.
