Sicario 3 is advancing, according to a detailed October 5, 2026 report by TheWrap. The reported package has Steven Knight writing the screenplay, Padraic McKinley directing, and Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro returning. The status has become more specific over time. On August 24, 2026, Josh Brolin told The Independent the film “is happening” and production would begin “soon.” At that point, the outlet said no director or cast had been announced and Sheridan’s return as writer was unconfirmed. TheWrap’s October 5 report subsequently named a director, screenwriter, and returning cast.

Who is writing and directing the third film?
Steven Knight is attached to the current screenplay
TheWrap attributes the current script to Steven Knight. Taylor Sheridan wrote the first two Sicario films, so the headline’s “replacing Taylor Sheridan” framing applies to the reported screenplay credit for this installment. The report does not establish that Sheridan has no other role in the project.

The project has had earlier drafts. TheWrap names Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen as writers of a prior draft; those credits do not replace the current report’s attribution of the screenplay to Knight.
Padraic McKinley is set to direct
TheWrap reports McKinley is set to direct. The Independent’s August report had no director named, reflecting the earlier status rather than contradicting the later attachment.

Which cast members are reported to return?
TheWrap reports that Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro are returning. Blunt did not appear in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, so her reported return would reunite the original film’s central trio. The report does not provide plot details or describe the characters’ roles in the new story.
When will filming begin, and when could the film be released?
Production is slated to begin in early 2027, according to TheWrap. That is a planned start window, not confirmation that filming has begun. The report says the film will be shopped to potential studios and identifies neither a distributor nor a release date, so a theatrical or streaming date cannot yet be stated from this reporting.

Who is producing Sicario 3?
TheWrap identifies Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill as producers for Black Label Media, alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road. Ed McDonnell is also named as a producer.
Why do some listings still name Taylor Sheridan?
Production List’s page, last updated October 6, 2026, still lists Sheridan as writer and does not name a director: Production List’s Sicario 3 entry. That tracker entry conflicts with TheWrap’s more detailed October 5 report naming Knight and McKinley. The reason for the difference is not established; the listing may reflect a superseded draft, but that has not been confirmed. Treat it as a dated tracker listing, not as stronger evidence of the current screenplay attachment.

TheWrap says plot details have not been revealed. Director Stefano Sollima described an earlier creative concept in a 2016 quote reproduced by The Independent: “The idea is to make three anthology movies with some of the core actors and [set] in the same world.” That statement reflects the earlier concept for the series; it does not confirm the plot or structure of the current film.
