For a business focused on Slovenia, .si is the clearest local signal. For a business serving several European countries or an international audience, .com offers a geographically neutral identity. Neither extension guarantees better search rankings: the right choice depends on where customers are, how the brand should be perceived, and how the site is organized. An eligible business may also consider .eu for a European identity.
How .si, .com and .eu differ
| Extension | Best fit | Google’s geographic treatment | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| .si | A business primarily serving Slovenia or emphasizing a Slovenian identity | Country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), which is a strong signal that a site is intended for its associated country | Register.si rules, registrar process, name availability and total registration cost |
| .com | A business serving multiple countries or positioning itself internationally | Generic top-level domain (gTLD), not associated with a specific location | Name availability, registrar terms and total registration cost |
| .eu | A qualifying business or individual seeking a European regional identity | Google treats .eu as generic for country-targeting purposes | EURid eligibility, name availability, registrar terms and total registration cost |
These distinctions are about audience signals and eligibility, not a ranking guarantee. Google describes ccTLDs as a strong country signal, while generic domains such as .com are not tied to one location. A .com site can still serve Slovenian customers; it simply does not communicate Slovenia through its extension. Google Search Central’s guidance on multi-regional and multilingual sites explains the distinction.
Choose based on where customers are
Choose .si for a Slovenia-first business
If most customers, services or business activity are in Slovenia, .si makes that focus immediately legible in the web address. It is the most direct country signal of the three options for users and search engines. This can make it a natural fit for a local company, though the extension alone does not determine who can visit the site or how it ranks.
Choose .com for cross-border or international positioning
If the business expects to serve customers across several countries, .com avoids tying the domain to Slovenia. Its generic status can suit a brand that wants one address across markets, but it does not prevent a company from building clear Slovenian or other localized sections on that domain.

Consider .eu for a European identity
.eu can support a brand that wants to emphasize a European connection. It is not a substitute for a Slovenia-specific signal in Google’s country-targeting framework: Google classifies .eu as generic for that purpose. Registration is also restricted to people and organizations meeting EURid’s eligibility criteria.
How the extension affects search targeting
Google’s guidance says a country-code domain is a strong signal of the country a site intends to reach. A generic domain such as .com or .eu does not carry that same country association. This is one signal among several—not a promise that a .si site will rank higher in Slovenia or that a .com site cannot reach Slovenian searchers.
For a generic domain serving multiple languages or locations, make each version of a page identifiable with locale-specific URLs and appropriate language or regional signals. Google describes country-specific domains, subdomains and subdirectories as possible URL structures; each has different organizational and maintenance trade-offs. Its guidance recommends using explicit locale-specific URLs and signals such as hreflang annotations or sitemaps where appropriate. See Google’s documentation on managing multi-regional and multilingual sites.

The practical decision is therefore two-part: select an extension that fits the business’s intended identity, then build a site structure that clearly serves each audience. Do not rely on the extension to communicate every language and market.

Check eligibility and .si registration rules
.si registration
Register.si’s terms published and effective on 15 November 2024 set a minimum domain length of two characters and a maximum of 63 characters, with restrictions on permitted characters and hyphen placement. The registry says holders submit requests through registrars. Its guidance also describes a return window conditional on the domain remaining inactive; confirm the current terms and process with the registry and registrar before relying on it. Read Register.si’s registration terms and registration guidance.
The reviewed .si rules do not establish a general Slovenian-residency requirement for holders. Do not assume either that residency is required or that no other conditions apply: check the current registry terms for the specific registration.
Rank #4
.eu eligibility
EURid’s published criteria allow organisations established in EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway to register .eu domains. Individuals may qualify based on residence or citizenship under EURid’s rules. Check EURid’s current .eu eligibility information before registering.

Check the chosen registrar’s current terms for .com registration. Domain rules and policies vary by extension and its manager; ICANN advises registrants to consult the relevant country-code manager for ccTLD policies. ICANN’s ccTLD policy FAQ provides general context.

Compare availability and the full cost
A domain name is useful only if the exact name is available on acceptable terms. Check availability and the registrar’s quote for each extension at the time you plan to register; availability and pricing were not established for any particular name here. Compare like with like, including renewal pricing, registration period and any bundled services. EU business guidance notes that costs vary with the registration period and associated services such as hosting, so an extension should not be assumed to be cheaper than another. EU guidance on domain names explains the factors that affect cost.
Keep the business in control of its domain
Register.si says holder information should remain accurate and current, and that the holder should have direct access to the registration contact email. For a business domain, register it in the business’s name where appropriate, use a monitored email account controlled by the business, keep contact details current and retain control of the registrar account. Register.si’s holder-data guidance sets out its expectations.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose .si if the business is Slovenia-first and a direct Slovenian signal fits the brand.
- Choose .com if the intended identity is geographically neutral and the business serves, or plans to serve, several markets.
- Consider .eu only if the European identity is useful and the registrant meets EURid’s eligibility criteria.
- Check the actual name under each extension, current terms and full renewal cost before deciding.
- Plan localized URLs and language signals if the site serves customers in multiple countries or languages.
- Keep registrant details, contact email and account access under reliable business control.
