Adobe Stock is the closest all-purpose Shutterstock alternative in 2026 if you want photos, vectors, templates, 3D, audio and video tied to Adobe tools. Choose iStock when you prefer credit packs or occasional purchases. Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay are useful free options for web and social projects, provided each asset’s license fits your use.

What Shutterstock includes

Shutterstock’s current offering spans still images, video, music, sound effects and AI-generated content. Its 2026 unlimited page lists more than 83 million images and more than 17 million videos, in addition to audio and AI-generation access. You can pay through subscriptions, one-off purchases or licensing plans. An alternative therefore needs to be judged on more than image count: asset types, payment model, licensing scope, search workflow and specialist coverage all matter.

Adobe Stock: the closest like-for-like replacement

Adobe Stock is the strongest substitute when your workflow already runs through Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro or other Adobe applications. Adobe’s plans describe standard assets as photos, vectors, illustrations, templates, 3D and audio, with separate video options and credit plans. Depending on the plan, a subscription can provide 40 standard assets or six videos per month.

The main catch is the standard license. Adobe states that a licensed image may be used perpetually, but print runs cannot exceed 500,000 and the image cannot be used in an item you intend to sell. That restriction matters for merchandise, templates, packaging, books, products with images printed on them and other resale uses. Confirm whether you need an extended license before downloading; a larger catalog or lower monthly price does not fix an unsuitable license.

iStock: best for credits and occasional downloads

iStock, a Getty Images service, focuses on a curated collection of stock images and video. Its plans offer monthly and annual subscriptions, including Premium + Video options, and standard licensing with the ability to add extended licenses. Credit packs are particularly useful when your demand is irregular: you can buy downloads for a campaign without maintaining a recurring subscription.

Getty describes iStock as a value-oriented service for small and medium-sized businesses, with subscriptions covering images, video and music. Compare the total cost of the credits or subscription you will actually use rather than choosing solely by the advertised per-download rate.

Service Useful when What to verify before publishing
Unsplash You need free, photographic images for websites, presentations or social posts The current license for the individual image, plus restrictions involving people, trademarks, resale and redistribution
Pexels You want a free source covering both photos and video Asset-specific terms and limits on recognizable people, brands, resale and redistribution
Pixabay You need a broad free library for prototypes and general digital work The current asset license and any third-party rights shown for the particular file
Unsplash+ You want an unlimited, image-only paid tier within the Unsplash ecosystem The paid-tier terms and whether they cover your intended commercial use

Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay

The UK Competition and Markets Authority identifies Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay as the main free-stock content websites in its 2026 market-review appendices. They can eliminate a stock budget for many web, social and prototype projects, but “free” does not mean every use is automatically cleared.

  • Open the current license attached to the exact asset, not just the service’s home page.
  • Check whether a recognizable person, logo, trademark, artwork or private property introduces additional rights.
  • Do not assume that selling the unmodified file, redistributing a library or using it as the central element of merchandise is allowed.
  • Keep a record of the asset page and license version used for a commercial project.

Getty’s annual-report disclosure describes Unsplash+ as an unlimited, image-only subscription. It is a paid option rather than a replacement for video, audio or vectors, so match it to an image-only workflow.

How to choose the right alternative

1. Match the media you actually need

  • Photos, vectors, templates, 3D, audio and video: Adobe Stock offers the broadest stated mix among the alternatives covered here.
  • Images and video with curated discovery: iStock is a practical paid choice.
  • Free photos or video for ordinary digital publishing: Start with Unsplash, Pexels or Pixabay, then verify the file’s terms.
  • Music, sound effects or AI generations: Confirm that the specific plan includes those formats; a free image library is not a substitute.

2. Pick a payment model that matches demand

  • Predictable monthly production: A subscription can reduce the effective cost when you use the included downloads.
  • Irregular campaigns: iStock credit packs avoid paying for unused monthly capacity.
  • No stock budget: Free libraries may work for low-risk digital uses, but staff time spent checking rights is part of the real cost.

3. Check license scope before downloading

Ask four questions for every candidate asset: Is commercial use allowed? Are print-run limits acceptable? Can the asset appear in a product, template or other item for sale? Do recognizable people, trademarks or editorial restrictions require additional clearance? Standard licenses are not interchangeable across providers, and an extended license may be necessary even when the download itself is included in a subscription.

4. Test workflow and search quality

Adobe Stock is most convenient when you need to search and license content inside an Adobe-centered workflow. iStock’s curated collection can help when consistency and art direction matter more than maximum volume. Free sites reduce cost but may require more manual filtering for model releases, logos, duplicates and license records.

Common scenarios

A design team producing several assets every week

Start with Adobe Stock if the team works in Adobe applications and can consume its monthly allowance. Check the standard-license print and resale limits against the deliverables before committing.

A small business with occasional campaign needs

Compare iStock credit packs with a short subscription. Credits are often easier to justify when downloads arrive in bursts rather than every month.

A creator making a website or social prototype

Unsplash, Pexels or Pixabay may be sufficient. Save the asset page and license information, and avoid treating a free download as permission to resell or redistribute the file itself.

Merchandise, packaging or products for sale

Do not select a service on price alone. Adobe’s stated standard license excludes images used in items for sale and limits print runs to 500,000; comparable projects may require an extended license from Adobe, iStock or another provider. Confirm the exact product license in writing before production.

Bottom line

Choose Adobe Stock for the broadest paid, Adobe-integrated workflow; iStock for curated content, credit packs and occasional buying; and Unsplash, Pexels or Pixabay when a free library meets your rights and quality requirements. The decisive comparison is the license attached to your intended use, not the headline download count.
