Usually, no. For everyday use, keep your PC’s OEM-recommended setting or Balanced. Ultimate Performance is worth testing only if a particular workload is measurably limited by performance settings and the improvement matters more to you than extra power use, battery drain, or heat. Microsoft’s general guidance says its Best performance mode can increase power consumption; that is not a promise of a specific speed gain from Ultimate Performance on every PC.

What a power plan does—and what it cannot do

A Windows power plan is a collection of settings that manages how the system balances performance and energy use. It does not upgrade the processor, graphics hardware, or cooling. Microsoft describes Balanced as automatically balancing performance and power consumption, while High Performance prioritizes maximum performance at the cost of higher power use. Those descriptions explain the intended trade-off; they do not establish that Ultimate Performance will make a particular Windows 11 PC faster.

Power plans are distinct from Windows’ user-facing power mode controls. On supported configurations, Windows power modes or the power slider offer a way to trade battery life against performance. What controls appear depends on the device and its OEM configuration. Microsoft’s power settings documentation explains the plan model, while Microsoft’s power-mode guidance describes the user-facing controls.

When should you use it?

For ordinary laptop use

Keep the OEM default or Balanced for browsing, office work, video, and other routine tasks. A higher-performance mode may use more power, and Microsoft warns that Best performance can make a laptop drain faster and run warmer. The amount of any change depends on the PC and workload; Microsoft does not give a universal battery-life or temperature figure for Ultimate Performance. On battery, the trade-off is usually a poor fit unless you have a specific task where extra responsiveness is worth it.

For a plugged-in desktop

Testing a higher-performance plan is more reasonable when you are investigating a repeatable, CPU-bound workload and the PC is plugged into reliable power. Still, do not assume it will increase game frame rates or shorten application run times. Compare results on the same machine under consistent conditions before deciding that the change helps.

For gaming or other demanding work

There is no universal Ultimate Performance-versus-Balanced benchmark in the cited Microsoft guidance. A demanding workload alone does not prove the plan is a bottleneck. Measure the outcome that matters for your task—such as completion time or frame-time consistency—and watch power use, heat, and fan behavior as well.

Does Ultimate Performance improve FPS or drain laptop battery faster?

FPS: No general FPS improvement is established for Ultimate Performance. Whether a power setting changes performance depends on the device, workload, and configuration, so compare frame-time consistency or frame rates on your own system rather than relying on a promised gain.

Battery: Microsoft says Best performance increases power consumption and can make a laptop drain faster. That supports treating higher-performance modes as a potential battery-life trade-off, but it does not establish a specific battery reduction for Ultimate Performance. Microsoft’s performance guidance states: “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption.”

Why is Ultimate Performance missing?

A missing plan is not necessarily evidence of a broken installation. Availability depends on the Windows device and its configuration. Microsoft says Modern Standby devices support Balanced or plans derived from Balanced. On those devices, the power slider is available only when Balanced or a derived plan is selected; choosing another plan can make the slider disappear. See Microsoft’s Modern Standby documentation and its power settings guidance.

For that reason, do not treat a missing Ultimate Performance entry as a reason to reset every power scheme. First check which plan is active and what your device supports. OEM power controls and hardware design can also affect what Windows exposes.

How to check or change plans safely

Microsoft’s powercfg utility can list power schemes, report the active one, duplicate a scheme, and activate a selected scheme. Creating a plan does not activate it automatically. Use the documented commands below from Command Prompt or Windows Terminal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. powercfg /list lists the available power schemes and their GUIDs.
  2. powercfg /getactivescheme identifies the currently active scheme. Record it so you can restore it if needed.
  3. If you are going to edit a plan, use powercfg /duplicatescheme <GUID> to make a copy. Replace <GUID> with the actual identifier shown by /list; duplication creates a plan but does not make it active.
  4. To switch plans, use powercfg /setactive <GUID>, replacing <GUID> with the identifier of the plan you intend to use.

Microsoft documents these controls in its powercfg command-line options reference. If the plan you want is not listed, these commands cannot establish that the device supports it.

How to tell whether the change helped

Compare the same workload on the same device, changing only the power plan. Run enough repeat trials to distinguish a consistent difference from ordinary variation. Microsoft’s energy-efficiency assessment guidance describes ways to assess energy consumption and mobile battery life; it does not provide a universal Ultimate Performance comparison.

  • Measure task completion time or frame-time consistency for the workload you care about.
  • Compare power draw or battery drain, and note whether the test is plugged in or on battery.
  • Observe heat and fan behavior under the same conditions.
  • Account for whether the device uses Modern Standby or OEM power controls, since those affect which plans and controls are available.
