No special benefit from unplugging an Apple TV once a month is established in Apple’s guidance. Apple recommends disconnecting power as a troubleshooting step for specific problems—not as routine preventive maintenance. If your Apple TV works normally, there is no Apple-recommended monthly unplugging schedule.
Does monthly unplugging help an Apple TV?
Apple’s reviewed support guidance does not say that a monthly power cycle clears memory, improves security, speeds up streaming, extends the device’s life, or prevents faults. Those benefits are not established by the sources cited here. For a device that is working normally, unplugging it once a month is unnecessary according to the available Apple instructions.
Keep routine unplugging separate from a targeted restart: Apple documents a power cycle as one troubleshooting step when an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD will not work, will not turn on, or shows a black screen. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions say to unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
How to power-cycle an Apple TV that is unresponsive
- Unplug the Apple TV’s power cord from the outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and check whether the device starts or the display issue is resolved.
If the problem is a black screen, also check the HDMI connections and that the TV is set to the correct input. Apple recommends checking video resolution and any HDMI switch or AV receiver in the connection path as part of troubleshooting.

When not to unplug it
Do not disconnect power while Apple TV is updating. Apple says to keep it connected until the update finishes. If “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update” remains on screen for more than an hour, Apple’s update guidance says to contact Apple Support before unplugging.
A stalled progress bar below an Apple logo with no text is a different situation: Apple gives a separate restart instruction if that screen has persisted for more than an hour. Follow the specific steps for the screen you see rather than treating every long pause as a reason to pull the plug.

Does leaving Apple TV plugged in use much power?
Apple’s 2021 environmental report for Apple TV 4K with Siri Remote says that model enters sleep/network standby after 15 minutes of inactivity by default. Under the report’s test conditions, standby draw was 0.42 W at 100 V, 0.40 W at 115 V, and 0.47 W at 230 V. These are measurements for the tested model and conditions, not figures for every Apple TV generation; they do not establish a universal household saving from monthly unplugging. Read Apple’s environmental report.
What about storms or long periods away?
Apple’s guide for Apple TV (3rd generation) advises unplugging during lightning storms or when the device will be unused for long periods. That advice concerns those situations, not a monthly restart routine. See the Apple TV (3rd generation) Important Product Information Guide.
