Don’t choose by operating system or sale badge alone. Compare the exact laptop configurations you can buy now against the apps you need, the way you work, and the full cost—including any accessories. A Tom’s Guide report dated October 7, 2026, put the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 at $1,099 on Amazon, but the available reporting does not establish a comparable Windows Amazon deal. That MacBook price therefore does not prove Windows is cheaper; check live listings before deciding.
What the October MacBook Air deal actually showed
Tom’s Guide reported that Amazon was selling the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 for $1,099, down from $1,299, and the 15-inch model for $1,299, down from $1,499, on October 7, 2026. The 13-inch deal configuration was listed with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Those are US-market prices reported on that date, not guaranteed current prices or stock. See Tom’s Guide’s deal report.
The same report said the discounts brought both models back to their pre-price-hike prices; the sale labels did not mean the laptops were below their original launch prices. WIRED’s September 2026 guide likewise listed the M5 Air at $1,099 on Amazon and $1,299 at Apple, describing a $200 increase from its earlier $1,099 price. How to decide between macOS and Windows
Start with the work the computer must do, then compare complete configurations rather than processor names. Microsoft’s Windows buying guide puts it simply: “Context matters more than specs. Space, mobility, battery life, and comfort shape your experience far more than processor names.” Its guidance asks buyers to consider where they will use the device, how long they will be away from power, their main tasks, screen needs, typing habits, who will share the computer, and how long they expect to keep it. - Required software: Confirm that the exact apps, work tools, games, and accessories you rely on support the operating system you choose. If a specific Windows-only or Mac-only application is essential, that may settle the platform question before price does.
- Screen and mobility: Choose a screen size and weight that work for your desk, commute, and travel. A larger display can be more comfortable for some tasks, while a smaller laptop may be easier to carry.
- Keyboard and trackpad: If you type or navigate for hours, comfort and feel matter. Try the devices in person if you can; specifications alone cannot tell you which input devices suit you.
- Storage and memory: Compare the capacity in each exact listing with your files, apps, and likely needs over the time you plan to keep the laptop. Do not assume two models are comparable just because they share a processor family or price range.
- Touch and pen use: If handwriting, drawing, or using a pen on the screen is part of your workflow, a Windows 2-in-1 may be a better fit. TechRadar notes that MacBooks in its reviewed lineup do not have touchscreens. See TechRadar’s Windows laptop guide.
- Ports and accessories: Count the connections your everyday setup needs and check the exact laptop’s port selection. TechRadar reports that the M5 MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt ports; users who need additional connections may need a compatible hub or adapter. Include that optional accessory in the budget if your peripherals require it.
What the battery test figures can—and can’t—tell you
Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours 28 minutes for its reviewed 13-inch MacBook Air M5. TechRadar reported nearly 18.5 hours in its own review testing of the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441, a Windows alternative it describes as a value option with long battery life. These are separate publications’ test results, not a direct comparison conducted under the same conditions, so they do not establish which laptop will last longer for your workload. Use review tests as evidence about a reviewer’s test setup, not as a runtime promise. Microsoft cautions that battery life varies with settings, usage, and other factors. If you regularly work away from an outlet, look for results from tests that describe their methods and compare devices under similar conditions; also consider your own workload and screen-brightness habits.

The Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441 is one reviewed Windows option for shoppers drawn to the MacBook Air concept but who prefer Windows. TechRadar highlights its value and battery life, but the available reporting does not establish a matching, current Amazon offer for a specific Dell configuration. Treat it as a model to compare—not as a verified deal or proof that a Windows laptop costs less than the MacBook in the October report.

For a fair comparison, line up the model and configuration you would actually buy on each side. Check the current total price, screen size, RAM, storage, ports, and any required accessories. If a Windows 2-in-1’s touchscreen or pen support matters to your work, include that practical advantage; if your software and workflow already fit macOS, compare the MacBook against Windows machines that meet the same needs instead of against the cheapest listing you can find.

A practical way to make the purchase
- Write down your must-haves. List required apps, tasks, minimum storage, preferred screen size, portability needs, and any touchscreen, pen, or peripheral requirements.
- Choose exact configurations. Select a MacBook and one or more Windows models that meet those needs. Avoid comparing a discounted base configuration with a more capable machine without accounting for the difference.
- Check live listings. Confirm the current price, seller, configuration, and availability for each candidate. The reported October 7 MacBook prices are historical snapshots, not a standing offer.
- Add the full setup cost. Include any hub, adapter, dock, or other accessory you genuinely need, along with the storage and memory you want from the start.
- Make the choice against your priorities. If the MacBook’s software fit, portability, screen, and input devices justify its live price, paying more may make sense. If a Windows machine meets your requirements at a lower total cost—or offers a touchscreen or 2-in-1 format you need—Windows may be the better buy.
