Spoilers for the “Woodland Beast” contract: kill the Scoia’tael and report the result to the captain for 30 Crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct. If you spare them, you can still report them and receive the letter, but not the Crowns; concealing what you found earns experience but neither of those rewards. The choice comes down to whether you want to spare the partisans, tell the captain the truth, or prioritize the immediate rewards.
What the “Woodland Beast” choice is about
Geralt investigates attacks on transports that appear to be the work of a monster. The investigation instead leads to Scoia’tael partisans behind the attacks. At the encounter, Geralt can fight them or let them go. If he spares them, there is a second decision afterward: what to tell the Redanian captain.
Choices and immediate rewards
| What Geralt does | Immediate result |
|---|---|
| Kill the Scoia’tael and report the result | 30 Crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct. |
| Spare the Scoia’tael and tell the captain they were responsible | A Letter of Safe Conduct, but no Crowns. |
| Spare the Scoia’tael and conceal what Geralt found | Experience for completing the contract, but no Crowns or Letter of Safe Conduct. |
The reward amounts and branches above are reported by Gamer Guides in its “Woodland Beast” walkthrough, last updated 22 August 2024; Game8 also reports that telling the captain about spared Scoia’tael earns the letter.

The walkthrough says the letter lets Geralt cross the Pontar and travel to Oxenfurt. That makes the letter the main practical reward in the choice: both killing and reporting the partisans and sparing them but reporting them can earn it.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose to kill and report if you want both listed rewards: the letter and 30 Crowns.
- Choose to spare and report if you want the letter while letting the Scoia’tael go.
- Choose to spare and conceal if sparing them and keeping their involvement from the captain matter more to you than receiving the letter or Crowns.
The available walkthroughs establish these contract rewards, but do not establish a broader main-story consequence for the choice. There is no documented basis here for saying it changes the war’s outcome or later main-quest events.
