Keep an MKV file if it plays in the apps and devices you use and you want its tracks, subtitles, or chapters. MKV is a container, not a codec, so the extension alone cannot tell you whether a particular player can handle the video and audio inside. If playback fails, check the file’s codecs and your target device before deciding whether to remux or re-encode it.
What an MKV file is—and what the extension tells you
MKV is the common file extension for Matroska, a media container. Think of it as an envelope that can hold encoded video and audio, along with subtitle tracks and other information. It is not itself a video or audio compression format. Matroska’s technical documentation puts it plainly: “It is NOT a video or audio compression format (codec).” (Matroska Basics)
That distinction matters when troubleshooting: two files ending in .mkv may contain different codecs and therefore have different playback requirements. The extension does not identify those codecs. RFC 9559, the Matroska Media Container Format Specification published in October 2024, is the current standards reference. (RFC 9559)
Why keep an MKV file?
Matroska is designed to keep multiple streams and useful navigation information together in one file. Depending on the file and the player, you may be able to select alternate audio or subtitle tracks, use chapters, and access metadata. The format also supports fast seeking and use over local networks or the internet. (Matroska Basics)

- Keep it as-is if it plays correctly in your normal setup and its tracks or chapters are useful.
- Keep the original as a master if you need a more compatible copy for one device but want to preserve the original’s tracks and other features.
- Consider storage separately. External storage can help with a growing video library, but Matroska does not require a special drive.
Why an MKV file might not play
Playback depends on support for both the container and the codecs inside it. A player may recognize MKV but still be unable to decode the particular video or audio stream. Microsoft says its Windows support “should allow playback of most MKV files if they contain supported codecs,” citing H.264 and AAC as examples of codecs an MKV may contain. Check the specific device or application you want to use; support varies, and an MKV extension by itself is not a compatibility guarantee. If the file fails, identify its audio and video codecs and compare them with the target player’s requirements before changing the file.

Should you convert MKV to another format?
Convert only when a real playback or workflow need calls for it. A different container may solve the problem if the streams are already supported but the destination does not accept Matroska. In that case, remuxing—moving streams into a different container without re-encoding them—may be enough. If the destination cannot decode a stream’s codec, that stream may need to be re-encoded.

Before converting, decide whether alternate audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, or metadata need to carry over, and check what the destination application accepts.

Before choosing, verify playback on the actual target device, determine which tracks you need to preserve, and find out whether the conversion method re-encodes any stream. The best choice depends on that device and workflow, not simply on whether the filename ends in .mkv.
