Usually, yes. Dynamic Lock is a useful backup for Windows users who carry a Bluetooth-paired phone when they step away: it can lock the PC if they forget to do so themselves. It may take up to a minute after the phone leaves Bluetooth range, though, so keep ordinary inactivity locking and sign-in after sleep enabled—and lock manually when you need immediate protection.
What Dynamic Lock does—and what it does not do
Dynamic Lock uses a Bluetooth-paired phone to infer when you are no longer near your Windows PC. Microsoft describes it as a feature that automatically locks your device when you are away. It is a fallback for a forgotten manual lock, not an instant proximity alarm: Windows locks within a minute after the phone is out of Bluetooth range.
That timing matters. If someone could access sensitive work on your screen as soon as you leave, press Windows key + L before walking away rather than relying on Dynamic Lock to act immediately.

Should you turn it on?
Enable it if your PC supports the feature, you usually take your paired phone with you, and a delay of up to a minute is acceptable for the situations in which you step away. It is less useful if you often leave your phone behind, Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable, or you require the screen to lock as soon as you leave.

- Not enough on its own: Your work or surroundings require immediate protection, or you cannot count on the phone being with you.
- Check compatibility first: Microsoft says compatible hardware is required; availability may vary by PC.
How to enable Dynamic Lock
- Pair your phone with the Windows PC over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
- On the PC, open Settings and go to Accounts > Sign-in options. The exact layout can vary by Windows version and device.
- Find Dynamic lock and turn on the option to allow Windows to lock the device automatically when you are away. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance gives the checkbox label as “Allow Windows to lock your device automatically when you’re away.”
- Take the paired phone with you when you leave the PC. Do not expect the lock to happen immediately; Microsoft says it occurs within a minute after the phone leaves Bluetooth range.
If the Dynamic Lock option is missing, first check whether the PC has compatible Bluetooth hardware and whether the phone is paired. A USB Bluetooth adapter may be an option for a PC without built-in Bluetooth, but Microsoft does not guarantee that a particular adapter will make Dynamic Lock work on a particular computer. Check both devices’ specifications rather than assuming an adapter will resolve compatibility.
Keep the other Windows lock protections enabled
Dynamic Lock works best as one layer of protection. Microsoft’s device security guidance recommends setting Windows to lock automatically after inactivity and requiring sign-in when the device wakes. Those protections cover situations Dynamic Lock may not, such as leaving the phone behind or not carrying it.

Bluetooth range varies with the devices and surroundings; Microsoft does not give a guaranteed distance. Also, a workplace or school account policy may disable some sign-in settings, as noted in Microsoft’s sign-in options accessibility guidance.

Turn on Dynamic Lock if your Windows PC supports it and you reliably carry its paired Bluetooth phone. Treat it as a convenient fallback—not a substitute for manual locking when speed matters, or for inactivity locking and sign-in after sleep.
