For ordinary apps that launch when you sign in to Windows 11, start with Task Manager. It offers a straightforward Enable/Disable control and a startup-impact label to help you decide what to review. Use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns when you need to investigate startup locations that Task Manager’s list does not cover. In Autoruns, uncheck an entry to disable it; do not delete its configuration unless you understand it and intend to remove it.

Neither a high impact label nor an unfamiliar name proves that an item is unnecessary or safe to turn off. The right choice depends on what the software does and whether you need it running at sign-in.

Task Manager or Autoruns: which should you use?

What you need to do Best fit Why
Disable a registered app that launches at sign-in Task Manager It provides a simple Enable/Disable control and a startup-impact indicator. Settings > Apps > Startup manages the same registered-app list. Microsoft’s Windows startup-app guidance describes both controls.
Choose which listed apps to investigate first Task Manager Its impact column classifies measured CPU time and disk activity during startup. Treat it as a resource-use clue, not a recommendation about whether to disable the app. Microsoft’s Win32 startup-app guidance explains the criteria.
Investigate something missing from the ordinary list or inspect other auto-start locations Autoruns It covers more than the everyday logon-app list, including Explorer extensions, services, scheduled tasks, and other locations. It can show file properties and jump to an entry’s registry or file-system location. Microsoft’s Autoruns documentation describes its coverage.
Stop an entry from auto-starting while you investigate it Either tool, depending on the entry Task Manager’s Disable action prevents a registered app from launching automatically without uninstalling it. In Autoruns, unchecking disables an entry; Delete removes its auto-start configuration. Autoruns documentation describes the latter controls.

How to disable an ordinary startup app in Task Manager

  1. Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Select the app you want to review, then select Disable. To reverse the change, select the item and choose Enable.
  4. Restart or sign in again and check whether the app or feature you rely on still works.

You can also open Settings > Apps > Startup. Microsoft says Settings and Task Manager configure the same registered startup-app list. Task Manager is useful when you want to see the impact column alongside the controls. See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.

What Task Manager’s startup-impact label means

The label reflects an app’s measured CPU time and disk input/output during startup; it does not judge whether the app is safe to disable or needed for your workflow. Microsoft Support and Microsoft Learn present slightly different disk thresholds, so do not treat the categories as a precise ranking across all devices.

Label Microsoft Support criteria Microsoft Learn criteria
Low Less than 300 ms of CPU time and less than 292 KB of disk I/O during startup. Microsoft Support Less than 300 ms of CPU time and less than 300 KB of disk I/O. Microsoft Learn
Medium More than 300 ms and less than 1 second of CPU time, or more than 292 KB and less than 3 MB of disk I/O. Microsoft Support 300 ms to 1,000 ms of CPU time, or 300 KB to 3 MB of disk I/O. Microsoft Learn
High More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk I/O during startup. Microsoft Support More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk I/O during startup. Microsoft Learn

Microsoft’s two pages differ on the low/medium disk boundary: Support uses 292 KB, while Learn rounds to 300 KB. The labels describe startup resource use; they do not promise a particular improvement in sign-in time if you disable an app.

When Autoruns is the better tool

Use Autoruns when the item you are investigating is not visible in the ordinary startup controls, or when you need to inspect a wider range of automatic-launch mechanisms. Its coverage includes logon entries, Explorer extensions, services, scheduled tasks, and other locations. The breadth is useful for diagnosis, but it also means you can encounter entries with system-wide effects.

Disable first; delete only deliberately

In Autoruns, unchecking an entry disables it. Delete removes the auto-start configuration instead. If you are not certain what an entry does, leave it in place while you identify it; do not delete a configuration just because its name is unfamiliar. Autoruns is available as a Microsoft Sysinternals utility; it is not required for routine sign-in-app changes.

What to check if an app is not listed

Microsoft documents Startup folders for apps that do not appear in the normal startup controls. These folders and registry locations are separate from the registered-app list managed by Task Manager and Settings. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance describes the per-user and all-users Startup-folder routes and registry locations. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences, so avoid editing startup registry entries unless you understand the change and have a reason to make it.

A cautious way to troubleshoot startup problems

  1. In Task Manager, review enabled apps and consider whether each needs to be available immediately after sign-in. Use the impact label only to prioritize what to examine.
  2. Disable one optional item at a time and keep a record of the change. Sign in or restart again, then verify that the features you depend on still work.
  3. If the item is absent from the normal list, check the Startup-folder routes Microsoft documents. Use Autoruns when broader visibility or its properties and location features are needed.
  4. If you are diagnosing a deeper app or service conflict, follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure rather than treating clean boot as a routine performance tweak. Track what you change and restore normal startup after the investigation.

Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions warn that functionality may be temporarily reduced during troubleshooting and that incorrect advanced boot-configuration changes can make a computer unusable.
