Usually, no—an ePrivacy screen is not a feature to avoid by default. It can help keep sensitive work harder to see from nearby seats, but that privacy comes with a narrower useful viewing angle when enabled. Whether it suits you depends on how often you work in public, whether you share your screen, and how the exact panel looks in both modes.
What an ePrivacy screen does
An integrated privacy display narrows the angles from which screen content is easy to see. It is designed to make the display more private from people sitting beside you, rather than to replace basic precautions such as locking your laptop when you step away.
Implementations differ. In its November 2016 white paper, HP described the original Sure View design as combining a proprietary backlight, 3M light-control film, and system hardware and logic controls. HP said that when privacy mode was enabled, the backlight focused light toward the center of the display; with the mode disabled, it dispersed light across the display. The documented EliteBook 840 G3 and 1040 G3 switched modes with Fn+F2. Those details describe that 2016 design, not every later HP panel or competing product. HP’s Sure View white paper

You work with sensitive information in public
If you regularly handle confidential documents, customer information, or work messages on a train, in an airport, or in a shared space, reducing side visibility may be useful. The effect is directional: people outside the intended viewing cone are the ones the feature is meant to deter, and it should not be treated as a guarantee that nobody can see your screen.

HP said its original Sure View technology reduced up to 95% of visible light in the privacy region outside the user’s 70-degree viewing cone. That is HP’s claim for the original implementation, not an independent test or a performance guarantee for current laptops. HP’s Sure View white paper
You can test the panel before buying
Privacy effectiveness and ordinary viewing comfort are specific to the panel and conditions. Lenovo’s guidance for the X1 Carbon Gen 9 and X1 Yoga Gen 6 says privacy performance varies with screen brightness, contrast ratio, and the physical environment. Lenovo Support’s guidance for those models

When to skip an integrated privacy display
You often share the screen
A narrower viewing cone can make it harder to show a document or presentation to someone sitting next to you. If collaboration is a regular part of your work, you may find yourself turning privacy mode off often or repositioning the laptop.
You need to view the screen from varied positions
People who frequently move around, use a laptop on a stand, or work with someone looking over their shoulder should check whether the screen remains comfortable from their normal positions. The available product guidance does not establish a universal image-quality penalty across all ePrivacy displays. It is not sound to assume that every such laptop is dim, color-inaccurate, or worse in normal mode.

How to compare laptop configurations
Do not rely on a product-family name alone: privacy panels may be options on particular configurations. Confirm that the exact SKU you plan to buy includes the display you want, then inspect that configuration with privacy mode both on and off if possible.
- At realistic side angles, does privacy mode make the screen difficult enough to read from nearby seats?
- With privacy mode enabled, can you comfortably read the display at your usual brightness and in your usual lighting?
- With privacy mode disabled, do color, contrast, and viewing angles meet your needs?
- Is the mode easy to toggle, and will you remember to turn it off when sharing the screen?
- Does the privacy panel come on the exact configuration you are considering?
There are no controlled, current cross-brand measurements here to rank models for brightness, color, contrast, or battery impact. Treat those points as things to check on the actual laptop rather than settled advantages or disadvantages of the feature.

Alternatives for occasional privacy
Use a removable filter
A size-matched clip-on or adhesive filter is an option if you only occasionally need side-view privacy or prefer to choose a standard display. For example, HP lists its BH0M5AA filter for most 16-inch widescreen 16:10 laptops, with slide tabs and adhesive stickers. HP specifies a 30-degree left/right viewing restriction and at least 70% luminous transmittance for this product. These are product-specific specifications, and “most” does not mean every display of that size will fit. Check your laptop’s display dimensions and aspect ratio before buying. Choose a standard panel and manage your surroundings
If you do not need a built-in privacy mode, choose a configuration without the integrated privacy panel and rely on physical positioning and ordinary screen-lock practices when privacy matters. This avoids buying a specialized display feature you may rarely use.
