Yes—change the router’s default administrator password to a unique one. Also check your Wi-Fi password, which is a separate credential used by phones, computers, and other devices to join your network. Securing both accounts, choosing modern Wi-Fi encryption, and keeping router software current are the key steps.

Which router password do you mean?

Routers use two passwords that are easy to confuse:

  • Administrator password: Lets someone sign in to the router’s settings. An administrator can change configuration, including the Wi-Fi password.
  • Wi-Fi password: Lets your devices connect to the wireless network.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends changing the router’s default administrative username and password and setting a unique, secure Wi-Fi password. Use administrator credentials that are unique to the router; avoid your name, address, or router brand. FTC guidance on securing home Wi-Fi

How to change the passwords safely

There is no reliable menu path or web address that applies to every router. Find the manufacturer and model, then follow its instructions for changing the administrator password and Wi-Fi password, or contact the manufacturer for help. If your internet provider supplied the router, its support team may also be able to direct you to the right instructions.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Identify the router’s manufacturer and model using its label or the documentation that came with it.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to sign in to the router’s settings and change the default administrator credentials.
  3. In the router’s instructions, locate the Wi-Fi or wireless settings and set a unique network password.
  4. Save the changes, reconnect devices if prompted, and log out of the administrator account when finished.

Changing the Wi-Fi password may require reconnecting devices that used the old one. Keep the new credentials somewhere secure and accessible to the people who need them.

Choose WPA3 or WPA2 encryption

A strong Wi-Fi password is not the only safeguard: the network’s encryption setting matters too. Prefer WPA3 Personal when available. If it is not available, use WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 Personal as the newer and best option, while noting WPA2 Personal also works; the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends WPA2 or WPA3 at minimum and advises disabling legacy WEP and WPA. Keep router software and settings secure

Check for firmware updates

Router firmware is its built-in software. Check the manufacturer’s website for a newer version and follow its update instructions. If your internet provider supplied the router, ask whether it sends updates automatically. The guidance does not establish a universal support lifetime for every router model, so check for your specific device. FTC guidance on router updates

Turn off features you do not need

The FTC recommends turning off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them. These features can make access or device discovery more convenient, but they can also weaken network security. Follow the router manufacturer’s instructions to find these settings, and log out as administrator after making changes. FTC guidance on router settings

When should you replace a router?

A password change alone is not a reason to replace a working router. The specific security trigger in the FTC guidance is an older router that supports only WPA or WEP: first check for a software update; if WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable, consider a replacement. When evaluating a replacement, check that it supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal and that its manufacturer provides firmware updates.

Do you need to change passwords on a schedule?

The official guidance cited here recommends unique, secure credentials but does not set a universal password length or routine rotation interval for routers. Change default administrator credentials, choose a unique Wi-Fi password, and update a password if you believe someone unauthorized knows it. For model-specific instructions or recovery help, consult the router manufacturer or your internet provider.
