The original Xteink X4 makes the most sense as a tiny secondary reader for compatible, DRM-free files—not as a first or all-purpose e-reader. The key question is not whether a book is an EPUB, but whether its file is DRM-free and the X4 can handle it. A review titled “Xteink e-reader review: I think book lovers should skip it” reaches that cautionary conclusion after finding its Kindle, Libby, and NetGalley materials did not work as expected. That is the reviewer’s experience, not proof that every title from those services is incompatible.
Who should skip the original Xteink X4?
Skip it as your main e-reader if most of your reading depends on books bought through Kindle Store, borrowed through Libby, or obtained from another service that supplies DRM-protected files. The review’s central concern is access: the reviewer could not use her Kindle, Libby, and NetGalley materials as she expected on the original X4, and found DRM-free EPUBs the practical fit. The result can vary by title and file; an EPUB extension alone does not establish that a book will work.
The X4 is a more plausible choice if you already keep compatible, DRM-free books and want a very small device for short reading sessions or as a companion to a larger reader. Independent reviews also describe offline use and microSD sideloading as advantages, while noting the small screen and, in one reviewer’s case, build-quality concerns. Those are personal observations, not standardized tests.

Can you read Kindle books or Libby loans on the X4?
Do not assume that a Kindle purchase or Libby loan can be transferred to the original X4. The review found the materials it tried from Kindle, Libby, and NetGalley unusable as expected, and argues that DRM-free files are the dependable use case. This does not establish that every book from each service fails; compatibility depends on the particular file and its DRM.

Before buying, identify the actual files you intend to read and whether they are DRM-free. If your normal library is tied to protected service downloads, the X4’s portability cannot solve that access problem.
Which files does it handle?
The available evidence points to DRM-free EPUB files as the practical fit for the original X4, but it does not establish a complete, model-specific file-format list for that older device. Do not treat the current X4 Classic’s file guidance as confirmation of identical original-X4 behavior.

For the X4 Classic, Xteink warns: “MOBI and PDF files may not be fully supported by the firmware, so we recommend converting them through the XTEINK official app before transferring them to your device.” That warning applies to the Classic listing. It should not be silently applied to the discontinued original X4.
What does the X4 do well, and what are the compromises?
Portability and simple reading
The title-linked reviewer found the original X4 pocketable, well-designed, and long-lasting in her own use. Another reviewer highlights compact hardware, offline reading, and microSD sideloading. These impressions support its appeal as a grab-and-go device, but they do not provide standardized battery or durability measurements.

Small display and reading tools
A 4.3-inch display keeps the device compact but leaves less text on each page than a larger reader. The independent reviews also raise software concerns: the eBook Reader blog reports stock-software formatting and navigation problems and says the device is better suited to secondary-reader duty than a first e-reader. That reviewer notes CrossPoint firmware as an alternative; behavior may differ by firmware version, and the observation is not a guarantee of a fix.
Lighting
The X4 Classic has no built-in front light, according to Xteink, which recommends an additional lighting accessory for low-light reading. This is a Classic specification, not confirmation of every original X4 configuration. If you often read in dim rooms, account for a separate light or ambient lighting before choosing either model.

Original X4 and X4 Classic are different models
Listings and specifications should not be conflated. Xteink’s current X4 Classic page identifies it as the X4 V2. A regional XTEINK BR page describes the original X4 as discontinued and the Classic as its successor; that is a regional lifecycle statement, not proof that the original is unavailable everywhere. Confirm the model named by any seller rather than relying on “X4” alone.

The Classic’s listed box contents include a magnetic charging adapter and microSD card. Do not assume those are included with every original X4 bundle. The battery-life figures above are vendor claims, not results from comparable independent tests.

How to decide whether it fits your reading
- Choose it as a secondary device if you have DRM-free books, value pocket size, and accept a small screen and simpler reading experience.
- Look elsewhere for a primary reader if your routine depends on protected Kindle purchases, library loans, or reading tools and navigation you expect from a full-featured e-reader.
- Check the exact model because original X4 and X4 Classic specifications, file guidance, and box contents are not interchangeable.
- Plan for lighting if the model you are considering lacks a front light and you read in low-light settings.
The title-linked review’s “I think book lovers should skip it” is best read as a warning about the X4 as a general-purpose reader, not a claim that no reader will find it useful. Its case is strongest for people who need broad access to their existing ebook services; it is less decisive for someone seeking a compact reader for compatible files.
