Often, yes—if last year’s flagship costs meaningfully less for the same storage and condition, still has enough software support for your plans, and its battery and warranty check out. But the model year alone does not settle the choice: compare the exact feature differences and purchase terms, and consider a current mid-range phone or a certified-renewed flagship too.

When last year’s flagship is the better buy

The older phone makes sense when the savings are real and the features you give up do not matter to you. Flagships often remain capable after a new generation arrives, but there is no reliable universal discount or percentage difference in performance between model years. Price and generational changes vary by model, region, configuration, and seller.

Compare like with like: the same storage tier, new versus used condition, unlocked or carrier-locked status, and warranty coverage. Include taxes, trade-in requirements, financing terms, and any likely repair cost in the total. A lower advertised price may be less attractive if it depends on a restrictive trade-in or comes without a useful return window.

Compare the changes you will actually notice

Check the exact models side by side rather than assuming the newest one is better in every way. Focus on the chip and performance, display, camera hardware and features, battery life, charging, and any new software capability you specifically want. A change matters most when it affects something you use often; a spec-sheet advantage you will not notice may not justify a substantial premium.

For example, Android Central’s Galaxy S26 Plus versus S25 Plus comparison describes the S26 Plus as bringing a refreshed design, newer chipset, and faster wireless charging, while characterizing the S25 Plus as retaining strong performance, cameras, software support, and battery life. That is a model-specific comparison, not a claim about current prices or every phone generation.

Another example shows why feature trade-offs are not always one-directional. Android Authority’s S25 Ultra versus S24 Ultra analysis discusses a $500 price-gap example and notes the newer model’s updated SoC and improved ultrawide camera, while the S Pen lost Bluetooth support present on the S24 Ultra. The outlet’s price example and assessment are not a market-wide discount or a universal verdict; verify the exact listing and features that matter to you.

Check how much software support remains

Count support from the manufacturer’s stated start date, not from the day you buy the phone. A discounted older model does not get a fresh update clock. Match the policy to the exact model and region, and make sure its remaining support covers how long you expect to keep it.

Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families receive five years. Update rollout timing can depend on the carrier and device and may take weeks. See Google’s Pixel update schedule.
  • Samsung Galaxy S series: Samsung’s US guide says the S24 series receives seven years of OS and security updates. It lists four years of OS updates and five years of security updates for the S23, S22, S21, S20, and S10 series. Because the page’s broader lineup copy is dated, check the exact model’s current terms directly rather than treating the guide as a current lineup list. See Samsung’s US Galaxy S-series guide.

For a used phone, price battery condition and repair risk

A used flagship is not equivalent to a new one with the same model name. Ask for the battery condition, repair history, and seller’s condition description in writing; check the return period and warranty; and estimate the cost of a battery or other likely repair before deciding. If the phone does not expose useful battery-health information, treat uncertainty as a cost rather than assuming the battery is healthy.

On iPhone 15 and later running iOS 17.4 or later, Battery Health can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture and first-use dates, and a replacement recommendation. On iPhone 11–14, Battery Health & Charging provides health information. Apple says battery aging can contribute to longer app launches, lower frame rates, longer processing times, reduced wireless-data throughput, dimming, lower speaker volume, and, in extreme cases, temporary disabling of the camera flash or other camera features. Its battery and performance guidance explains these effects.

Apple’s capacity figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not a guarantee about an individual used phone: iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 and later are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 cycles. Actual capacity depends on use and charging. Apple describes rechargeable batteries as consumables whose capacity and performance decline over time.

Compare new, certified-renewed, and mid-range options

Purchase condition changes the risk as much as model age. A prior-year phone sold new, a used phone from an independent seller, a manufacturer-certified renewed device, and a newer mid-range phone are different options. Compare each on price, support remaining, features, warranty, return rights, and repair exposure. Modern mid-range phones can be a meaningful alternative if their particular camera, performance, or other features meet your needs; an older flagship is not automatically the better choice.

For buyers in the US, Samsung says its Certified Re-Newed phones receive a certified new battery, genuine Samsung parts, a 147-point quality inspection, and a one-year limited warranty. The program page states a 15-day return period, subject to restocking fees. Those are terms of Samsung’s US program, not a promise about renewed phones from other sellers or in other regions. Check the current listing and terms at Samsung Certified Re-Newed.

A practical comparison before you buy

  1. Match the offers: Compare the same storage and condition, then add tax, trade-in conditions, financing, carrier lock, and included warranty.
  2. List the meaningful differences: Identify changes in chip, display, cameras, battery and charging, and any must-have new feature. Decide which are worth paying for in your use.
  3. Verify remaining support: Look up the official policy for the exact model and region. Calculate from the manufacturer’s stated start date and compare it with your expected ownership period.
  4. Assess condition and recourse: For used devices, check battery health where available, request repair and condition details, and confirm the return window and warranty. Include plausible repair costs.
  5. Compare alternatives: Put the older flagship beside a current mid-range phone and any certified-renewed offer with documented terms. Check regional compatibility and the actual seller’s listing before paying.
