The M5 MacBook Pro is no longer just a rumor: Apple announced the 14- and 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models in March 2026, alongside the 14-inch base M5 model. The real decision is whether the model that fits your work is a worthwhile upgrade from your current Mac—or whether you are willing to wait for an unconfirmed successor.
Which M5 MacBook Pro models are real?
Apple announced 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026. Apple said preorders would open March 4 and availability would begin March 11. Its announcement also lists a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip. These are announced products, not predictions. Apple’s announcement gives the lineup and announcement-era US pricing.
| Model | Apple’s US starting price at announcement |
|---|---|
| 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 | $1,699, with 1TB starting storage |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | $2,199 |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | $2,699 |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max | $3,599 |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max | $3,899 |
Those are US launch prices, not a statement of current sale prices or prices in other countries. Retail pricing and configurations can change.

Base M5: for everyday work and lighter professional workloads
The 14-inch base M5 is the entry point in this lineup. Tom’s Guide’s October 5, 2026 buying guide characterizes it as a modest specification bump over the M4 and advises that owners of last year’s 14-inch M4 can skip it. That is the publication’s upgrade judgment, not a rule for every buyer: a machine that struggles with your actual work may still need replacing. Tom’s Guide’s buying guide provides its assessment and test results.

M5 Pro and M5 Max: for heavier CPU or graphics demands
Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations have up to an 18-core CPU and a GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core. The 16-inch technical specification page lists configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory for specified M5 Max models and storage options up to 8TB. These higher-tier configurations are relevant if your work benefits from more processing, graphics capability, memory, or storage; compare the particular configuration you need rather than assuming every M5 model has the same capacity. Apple’s technical specifications detail the 16-inch configurations.
What Apple claims about M5 performance and battery life
Apple advertises up to 4x AI performance versus the previous generation and up to 8x versus M1 models. It also claims up to 30 percent faster performance against a specified previous-generation 16-inch M4 Pro system. These are Apple’s comparisons, not independent measurements; the company’s announcement includes the comparison and testing notes. Read Apple’s stated comparisons and qualifications.

Apple’s announcement describes up to 24 hours of battery life. Its detailed 16-inch specification distinguishes the chip configurations: up to 24 hours of video streaming for M5 Pro and up to 22 hours for M5 Max. Treat these as manufacturer claims, and note that the detailed figures refer to video streaming rather than every kind of use. Tom’s Guide separately reports 18 hours and 14 minutes in its test of the 14-inch M5, compared with 8 hours and 16 minutes for the M4 in its test. Those are that publication’s results under its own methodology, not Apple’s battery estimates. Apple’s specifications and Tom’s Guide’s test coverage describe the respective figures.

Apple says the M5 Pro and M5 Max models add its N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, Thunderbolt 5, and a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. Those features may matter if you need the newer connectivity or camera, but they do not by themselves establish that an upgrade is worthwhile for a Mac that already meets your needs. For the 16-inch model, Apple lists a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display; screen size and configuration are part of the choice between the 14- and 16-inch versions. Apple’s announcement and technical specifications describe these features.

Should you buy an M5 MacBook Pro or keep waiting?
- Consider buying now if your current Mac cannot handle your workload, and you can identify the M5 tier, memory, storage, and screen size that solve the problem. The announced models have defined configurations and specifications, rather than features that depend on a future product rumor.
- Consider skipping the base M5 if you own a recent 14-inch M4 that still performs well. Tom’s Guide specifically recommends that many such owners skip the base M5; reassess if your own work exposes a real performance or capacity limit.
- Compare Pro and Max against your actual workload if you need demanding CPU or GPU performance, high memory capacity, or large storage. The M5 Pro and M5 Max are distinct tiers, and the top capacities apply only to specified configurations.
- Wait only if uncertainty is acceptable and a possible next-generation design matters more to you than choosing from the current lineup. Reports about possible future features do not establish what Apple will release or when.
As a practical check, write down what your current Mac fails to do, then compare that need with the specific M5 configuration you would buy. If the gap is modest and the machine works reliably, waiting is a reasonable choice; if it is blocking work you need to do, a confirmed model may be more useful than an unknown release date.
