Buy at launch if playing immediately is worth the price and the uncertainty; wait if reviews, a lower price, or time to clear your backlog matter more. There is no universally best buying date, and neither a future discount nor a refund is guaranteed.
How to decide whether to buy at launch
Compare the value you place on playing now with the launch price and what you know about the game. The decision is personal: a release-window experience may be worth paying more to you, while another player may prefer to have more information before spending.

- Playing now: Is immediate access important to you, or would waiting make little difference?
- Confidence: How sure are you that the game suits your tastes, based on information you trust?
- Platform and version: Do available reviews cover the platform and version you plan to play?
- Uncertainty: Are you comfortable buying before more is known about the launch experience?
- Budget and backlog: Is the launch price comfortable, and do you already have games you want to finish?
- Refund terms: What policy applies to your platform, region, and transaction?
Buying at launch can make sense when immediate access matters enough to justify the price and uncertainty. Waiting can make sense when you value more information, lower spending, or time for your backlog. Those are decision factors, not predictions about a game’s quality or future price.
What reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Reviews can add useful evidence, but publication timing and scope vary. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey records journalists’ concerns that short lead times for review copies can affect review quality or delay publication. That is survey commentary, not a measure of every review or game.

Before relying on a review, check whether it covers your platform and the version you will play. A review of another platform or an earlier version may not answer the questions that matter for your purchase.
Waiting for a sale is not a timetable
A future discount may lower the cost, but the available policy information does not establish when a particular game will go on sale or whether it will. Do not treat a guessed waiting period or discount percentage as a reliable forecast.

Steam says it does not refund the difference when a game’s price changes. Its pricing FAQ says customers may request a refund for the original purchase and repurchase at the current sale price, subject to refund eligibility. That option is conditional and does not predict when a sale will happen.

Refund eligibility depends on the platform, region, and transaction. Do not buy on the assumption that you can return the game; check the applicable terms before purchasing.

Steam pre-orders
Steam’s refund policy says that a released pre-order can still qualify for a refund if the request is submitted within two weeks of release and playtime is under two hours, subject to the standard policy. This is a Steam-specific example, not a general rule for other stores.
PlayStation Store in the United States
For the United States, PlayStation’s Store policy allows cancellation of a digital game within 14 days of purchase only if downloading or streaming has not started, except for faulty content. Digital pre-order conditions also depend on when the order was placed and whether downloading or streaming of the main product began. Check the policy for your own region and transaction.

If the game is in Early Access
Early Access is a specific case where the game’s current state matters directly. Steam Support advises: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” This advice concerns Early Access; it should not be treated as a promise about the timing or outcome of updates.
